to mpeg or avi

Post by ozzie3811 »

just wondering what is the best way for me.
I have a dvd cam. It records in mpeg. I can import the files using a number of different programs, as long its in the mpeg format. I have done some reading and still not sure of which way to go. I plan to edit using either vs10 or ms8. I know my way around vs10. but want to start using a better program. I have the tryout for sony vegas and find that that is the fastest way of importing from my cam. So my questions are

1. should I import from the cam directly, or by putting the mini dvd disk in the computer?
2. Should I convert to dv format to edit, or just edit in the mpeg format ?

I read on adobe websight a post from an experienced editor, that he finds it much easier to import using nero vision and exporting in the dv avi formate.

After editing I am exporting to dvd. I have made a few dvd using vs9, and find that the quality is not that bad, but I feel I can get a little better if I tweek things.

3. Will the quality be much better if importing to mpeg and converting to dv avi, and then aurtoring to dvd ? On a few passages I am going to have to lighten up the clips. but just a handfull.
Thank you for any help.

Any conversions along the way are not going to improve the quality, on the contrary. I would keep my footage in mpeg and smart render after editing. That way, only the edited passages are going to be re-rendered, leaving the rest alone.

Conversion to DV avi will not re create detail that was lost in the original compression but will need to be re compressed to mpeg for DVD at the end. That can only have a detrimental effect on the quality.

Thank you for an answer. I have been tormented with this for a few weeks and have not started on anything yet because of this. I have looked into conversion software also, not knowing what to get. I did not think the quality could get any better, but because I read that its best to edit in avi, I had doubt as what to do.
Need to read up on smart render now. As I take it, it does conversions on the clips that are being changed, either through transitions or chorma, etc,. and leaves the rest untouched.

That's it in a nut shell.

It is advisable to do all your edits in DV-AVI if your footage happens to come from a MiniDV camcorder and is in DV-AVI. Not much point converting mpeg source files of maybe 4 GB per hour to DV-AVI at 13 GB per hour. What are the additional 9 GB going to hold? Even with HD it is advisable to stick to mpeg. At such high bit rates the detrimental effects that some people, including myself, experience when editing mpeg files are all but non-existent.

Because of the problems with editing relatively low bit rate DVD mpeg files, like sound out of sync etc., I generally advise against a DVD camcorder and would not use it myself. There seem to be people though who use that kind of camcorder and edit with Ulead products without any problems.
