Rezie default measurement

Post by jgriffs »

To try out PhotoImpact, got a cheapy of V 8. One thing noted in my review was that pixels was the favorite and default unit of measurement. When "Resize" is selected, the "Active image" size is given in pixels. I got this to read inches finally. On that same window, however, the "New Image" is "User Defined". I can manually change that to a specific "standard photo size" and click in the "Keep aspect ratio". Then if performs as I would like.
Is there a way to make the default of everything inches and keep the default "Keep aspect ratio?
I want to upgrade from my 1996 SoftKey Photo-Finish (Am I behind the times or what?) but enjoy the simplicity of it regarding the issues about which I am making the inquiry.

It may be news to you but a digital image does not have any tangible dimensions like inches or feet or miles or whatever tickles your fancy. A digital image is made up of a lot of pixels, one next to the other  How big that image will print depends on how many of these pixels you squeeze into an inch of photo paper. As long as it is in digital format, pixels are the only unit of measure that makes sense. Whilst PI gives you a dimension in the properties, that is based on the current print resolution. Change the resolution and the dimensions will change. The image is still the same though, displaying full screen at the same level of zoom, regardless of what size PI gives you for "image" in its property sheet.

Your TV picture, lets use the PAL standard frame size of 720 x 576 pixels for a 4:3 aspect TV or the NTSC frame size of 720 x 480 (yes, that is also 4:3 aspect but some wide screen TV's still have the same pixel dimensions), it is still the same frame size irrespective whether you watch it on a tiny 12" portable or on one of the huge 50" Plasma TV's.
