WMV - capped resolution of 320x240?

Post by BuZZarD »

I wish to encode my movie as a WMV so I can play it on any pc without additional codecs installed.

The video needs to be a resolution of 720x576.
If I select wmv/asf codec, there is no way to specify the higher res than 640x480 zune or better looking 320x240?

The filesize isn't important but the ability to play the video back without additional codecs is absolutely vital as it will be played on corporate networks with no ability to install other codecs.

you can specify the output resolution of your WMV file. when you click "Create Video File", instead of choosing "WMV" choose "Custom". a create video file dialog box would appear. choose windows media video as your output file then click "options". on the video save options dialog box, you have 3 tabs, ulead videostudio, profiles and attributes. click on profiles.

in this screen, you have the choice of changing the settings of a profile or create a new one. to create a new one, click "customize". a new dialog box will appear. click "new" then, on the new dialog box, type in the name of your new profile, check audio and video under the media type section, click add under the target bit rates section and type in your desired output bitrate. after this, you would notice that a new tab appears and it is named as the bitrate you typed in under the target bit rate section. in this new tab, choose the audio format you want from the drop down menu and type in your desired output video resolution. after the changes you've made, click "OK" from the edit profile window and then "Close" from the manage profile window. you're now back at the video save options. under the profile section, select the profile you made from the drop down menu then click OK. type in your file name then save. you could also edit a profile instead of creating a new one.

I think the video frame size 720x576 is not possible with VideoStudio even if you customize your settings, you cannot change the frame size.

Why not try WMV 720 30p? I think you wouldn't need anymore codec with this kind of format. Its a little bigger than your preferred settings though.

Really? I don't get this choice. Never have. All I get is a list of the existing profiles. I can't even customize the frame size of existing profiles. That choice is always grayed out.

VS9, VS10, and now VS11 have all had this same WMV problem for me. Even now with VS11+ I figured I could get by with the Zune 640 X 480 30 fps profile but selecting that just creates a Pocket PC 208 X 160 20 fps video. It's like VS11 does whatever if feels like when it comes to creating WMV files.

Do I have some wierd installation problem here? I have posed this question to Tech Support but they can't seem to formulate an answer other than what's in the users manual.

Hi Mark,
This may not exactly fix your problem but from experience on the forum I have noticed that just about every problem relating to WMV files has had as it's source the installation of the WMV9 Series codecs. It seems that VS only detects what is there so it may be that the WMV installation has a problem.
The relevant Windows page can be found here, so maybe it's worth a try to download the WMV Series 9 Encoder and see if that helps.

Hey that seemed to work. I tried the Zune 640X480 profile and that works now. I need to try creating my own custom profile to see how that works but at least the option of creating a "new" profile now exists.

Thanks for the info.
