Hi I am using 8.0 se basic. I copy the avi files off my camera or the sd card to the laptop using windows explorer. I open a an avi file into the viewer. I cut a portion of the video. I click on save trimmed video. it processes and then it tells me 'unable to access audio codec. HELP!

You need to tell us exactly what kind of .avi file it is as there are a variety of possibilities. With the .avi file open in the Video Studio, right click on it and copy *all* its properties down here please.
If the audio is Dolby, then only VS9 onwards could handle Dolby natively (there was an expensive plug-in for VS8 which is no longer available.) If it is one of the more recent highly compressed audio formats, then the codec would usually be on the installation disc which came with the camera.
Can you also tell us exactly what camera brand and model it is please.
