my video is upside down

Hello

I had an h.264 video in mkv and converted it to xvid avi to be usable in video studio 10/11. I split it by scenes and thumbnails are upside down. Not a big deal since in preview everything is ok. But after creating final video it always plays upside down. I tried many formats and players and codec settings. Do you have an idea what can cause this?

Also I would like to ask for tips how to speed up preview in VS. There is not much options in menus. Although my pc is old, it should be able to play low res preview with clean cuts, no effects etc - but that is just not the case with any source of decent quality.
