VS10+ crashing after reinstall

Post by middlebury madness »

I had a HD meltdown at the beginging of July. Had to start over with a new hard drive. Most of the data was on other drives and backed up but had to reinstall all my programs. Have had nothing but trouble with VS10+ had some old projects going and many deadlines so haven't wanted to start in with 11 yet.

I'll be working and then go to download music from a cd or put in a video clip or add some still jpegs and it will all of a sudden "encounter a probelm and have to close. I save regularly but it is stll a pain. I seem to remember having this problem when I first started using 10+ but hadn't had the problem in quite a while so have completely forgotten how it was remedied. I have xp professional now (had xp home before) with all updates/sevice packs installed. Other than not reinstalling VS9 or 3D and a number of other unused programs there isn't much different.

Have searched the internet with no luck.

The last message said: application Error
instruction at "0x0b7237ab" referenced memory @ 0x0cd420c8 memory could not be read.

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

This behavior occurs because the operating system does not allocate a large enough buffer for the maximum string length permitted. When the data is greater than the buffer size, the Winlogon service terminates abnormally and your computer generates the error message.

Microsoft suggests that you install the latest patches, but you said you had them installed.

So my suggestion is that you increase your virtual memory.

To do that > right click on My Computer, then click Properties > go to the Advance tab then click Performance > click the virtual memory button and adjust the Min to 1024 and Max to 4096.

I went in to check and I am set at: initial of 2046 and max of 4092 and currently 2046. Do I still need to change this?

Just to make sure I have gone into microsoft updates and done all the critical updates are there some optional updates that should also have been done?

It's unlikely to be related to your error message, but there is an update to DirectX 9.0c, dated July 2007, available on the Microsoft DirectX website which you should install.

Thank you... have taken care of it already. Still get the inopportune crashes. Hadn't gotten them for almost a year, until the reinstall of the OS and program. I am sure there is a patch that I need I just cannot remember where and what. I'll keep working on it.

Oddly enough, I have never applied any of the patches to VS10+ as I never encountered any problem which the patches were meant to solve. And it continues to work just fine...

So why does it continue to crash on me? Is there something I am missing? after working on a video or slide show for 10-15 minutes it all of a sudden freezes then shuts down with the Sorry but Video Studio has encountered a problem and has to shut down. then it comes up with the vstudio.exe applications error. Referenced Memory could not be read.

You haven't told us what the format is of the various files you are using, video and audio. One might be in a format which VS cannot find the right codec for. Or one of the files might be corrupt. It's difficult to say without knowing this information. So can you right click on one or more of the video files within Video Studio (if you are using different formats) and copy down all its properties here please.

That sort of message can also be indicative of a problem with your RAM. You can do a Google search for a free Ram test to see if yours is OK. Let it run a few times because often an emerging RAM problem is only revealed after all the range of tests has run a few times.

All I am using are JPEG AVI & WAV Files. I will run the RAM test but this is happening with projects that were running fine before the new hard drive and the reinstallation of the Operating system and programs. the only difference is that I am now using the xp Pro rather than the home. I had this problem when I first installed VS10+ but something solved it and I cannot remember what. I thought it was a download maybe from microsoft.

Have you made sure all your background applications are closed down? I used to get the same frustrating problem with VS10+ (but not VS8 or 9) under both XP Home and XP Pro. I tried every suggestion I could find on the Forum as I didn't really want to close down my internet connection, virus checker and firewall but when I do, the crashes go away. If you use Skype, try EXITing just that app - that usually does the trick for me.

Before reinstalling the os & programs on the new drive I had no problems having word, ps cs2 open and even outlook express open while working. I have hyperthreading. So far this morning I have been on 3 hours and no crashes. updating the Directx last night may have been the problem. I'll see how this afternoon goes.
