WinDVD 8 Install Problem. Error 1721

Post by rwalker66 »

I am trying to install WinDVD 8 which came with DVD MF 6+. Before it would install it said I had 2 previous versions of WinDVD on my PC that needed to be removed, versions 4 and 7. It got rid of 4 but it looks like it couldn't get rid of 7. Now I get the following error message when I try to install WinDVD 8:

Error 1721 There is a problem with this windows installer package....etc etc

I then get a message saying:

Error: -1603 fatal arror during installation

Any idea how to resolve this? Thank you.

Well since I never received any assistance I figured out how to fix this problem myself, although I'm not sure which fix fixed it.

I found this page on Microsoft support:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891985

When I tried the first thing Microsoft suggests and was in safe mode a box came up saying I had a folder on my computer called "program" and that could cause problems for programs. It told me it could rename it "program6" and that should prevent problems. I told it to do that then proceeded with the fix for the error 1721 message. When I rebooted not only could I install WinDVD 8 with no problems, the fix also fixed an APC Powerchute software problem I've had since I bought the UPS unit a year ago. It also fixed a DVD MF6 problem I was having where the launcher wouldn't launch. Not sure which thing I did corrected all the problems but just wanted to post this info for anyone in the future who might be having the same problems.
