uninstalling ulead

Post by cormacmurphy »

I downloaded the ulead trial, now my 30 days are up. I have been trying to uninstall it, as it takes up a bit of memory. when I go on my start menu to uninstall it there is nothing there, so I go onto control panel, add/remove programmes. when I get to it, and press remove, a little box comes up saying '1158:' and ok at the bottom. when I press ok the box goes and nothing else happens. any ideas?

Sorry to hear about that. I don't like accumulating "junk" on my computer either. But, it should just be taking-up disk space, not "memory". Leaving the program on your computer should not affect the computer's operation in any way.

Note: Although I'm a forum moderator, I'm not a Ulead employee, I don't have any inside information about how to fix this, and I have no idea what "1158" means. :?

You could try using Windows Explorer to find the Ulead folder (in the Program Files folder), and delete the files and folders maually from there. If you don't have any other Ulead software on your hard drive this shouldn't be too difficult or too dangerous. But, there is always some risk when you start deleting files & folders! So, it's up to you...

If you worked on any projects, there may be a Movie Factory folder in your My Documents folder too. There should be no risk in removing that. You would also need to manually Explore your Start menu and delete the shortcuts there. And, you can remove the desktop shortcut if there is one.

This will not remove everything. It may leave some DLLs, and it will leave some references in your Windows Registry. But, it should get rid of the big files.

Oh.... Back-up all of your important files & documents before you start "hacking". In the unlikely event that something terrible happens, you can re-install Windows, your applications, and your documents....

Sadly this is not true. If you simply install MF (or probably any other InterVideo product) the way it is delivered, without modifying the installation folder and removing certain items before installing, your system will have additional hidden services running that use your internet connection to phone home. This includes the InterVideo InformationService that was installed in the past even if not chosen.
The InstallShield UpdateService is installed and activated on the first boot after installation with a "RunOnce" registry entry. It is very difficult to find and remove all of its nests in the registry once installed.

If you are not experienced with the registry and services and want to remove this stuff manually, you can remove the entire folders containing the programs instead (adjust the folder names to localized versions in your language):
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\
C:\Program Files\InterVideo Information Service\
C:\Windows\InstallShieldUpdateService.exe
(The last one, I believe, is there to reinstall itself if you just remove the programs)

Simply unchecking an option (if the program offers options) may prevent it from doing certain things via interent, but it will still load when you boot, and will use your memory as running process.

Get something like the Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com (now MS).

It may be easier to re-install the trial version again.
Then reboot the machine.
Go directly to the add/remove programs and see if you can remove it then.

Good idea. But I would first download the trial again because there is a chance that the installer was fixed since last downloaded if problems were discovered.
