Sounds like it might be a hardware problem. Please complete your profile, as requested in the "before you post" thread.

Nature of the problem: unable to open recent productions due to file reading error

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?) video footage personally filmed off a cannon mv960, audio from my itunes music library

What devices are involved and their mode of connection? ...

Project Settings: microsoft avi files 24 bits, 720x480 19:0, 29.97 fps,

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)

PAL or NTSC

Error Codes: file reading error [20379:1:121]

ok i filled out the form as best as i could, by hardward problem do you mean something wrong with the actual laptop? if so could you please suggest any possible solutions as i really need to get this project done and not being able to access my latest changes to it is extremely fustrating!

thanks for your help

I'm sorry but getting info seems like drawing teeth.

1. I assume the MV9c0 is mini-DV? Did you capture using the DV type 1 or 2? I recommend you use the type 1 throughout.

2. I assume you have set the project settings to use the DV type 1 or 2 codec settings.

3. If you take a captured project into the timeline and save it, I assume it will then open OK?

4. For me, the alarm bells start ringing with the introduction of "audio from my itunes music library". I assume these are mp3? There is no standard for MP3, which is actually derived from a video format, not an audio one, and some types of mp3 codec produce tracks which can conflict with the existing video. The standard procedure to use mp3 is to convert the files to wav, using any non-video audio editor, such as the free Audacity, and insert the wav files to your timeline. In some cases, it is even impossible to use mp3. I would give a better than 50-50 chance that this is your problem.

Isn't this the fix for synchronization errors - where the audio and video tracks get out of synch? I've used MP3's in my timelines off and on since the MSP7 days and while they're not ideal, they don't seem to cause file reading errors...

The file reading error indicated here may be due to a hardware/disk problem or maybe even severe disk defragmentation. Maybe a disk defrag and disk check might be in order (I don't think Windows has the tools to do a really thorough disk check so an aftermarket program might be needed - does anyone have any suggestions?)

Are there any issues in any other programs - random errors, delays when saving or loading files, etc?

It's a fix for a multitude of errors cause by mp3. I said that it was a better than 50% chance, but the other 49% still exists, including hardware problems I evoked earlier.
