Need Help With Output File

Post by dsr_sp »

Hi, I've downloaded a trial version of MovieFactory to make a DVD from 2 avis that I have.

The length of the AVI's is 1h30m and 2h. The problem is that in the final screen, when you decide what to do with the files (burn, create folder or ISO) the program tells me that the output file size will be something like 37GB... what's going on?

I used to to this kind of job with another program, and it did the job fine, the dvd folder was always created to fit in a 4.7 dvd and not a extremely large 37GB video_ts folder.

Please, somebody help me, I would love to stay with MovieFactory, it's a nice software.

Best regards.

Even at the highest settings for mpeg you'd only have a file about 10gb or so, you must be doing somehitng wrong with your choice of settings.

What sort of avi files are they?

Hi Skier, they are both 16:9 movies, when I add one of them to project, that bar in the lower part of the software goes up to 6GB or so, then I add the second movie and it goes to 11GB or so, and finally when I go to the final screen it tells me that I need 37GB free in my hd to create the DVD. I really don't understand, they're both simple movies.

I can't give you specific info on the movies because they're at home, but when I get there I'll throw them on GSpot and post here the info if you want it.

Just two simple avi's, it's crazy, I don't know what's going on.

Thanks for the attention.

Best regards.

I don't understand either, it'll be best to tell us the file type of avi and the settings you are using to make the dvd.

The only thing I can think of is that it needs space to render the movie and space for temp files before the space to make the dvd files, so triple the size of the movie, but even that is a bit odd.

Have you told it to make a movie?

If not, try and see what the final size of the saved files are.

The reason you are getting the information that you need 37G of HDD space is because MF will render a temporary mpg version and then render that into the DVD format.

I found that all the Ulead products report the wrong information about space needed on the HDD and DVD. The information on file space needed doesn't correspond to anything I can relate to.

Is it refusing to continue, or is it just warning you? If it will continue, you can go ahead and create the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders on your hard drive and check the actual size -

- On the burn-screen, check box that says Create DVD Folders and un-check the box that says Create To Disc.

If the resulting VIDEO_TS folder is less than 4.3GB, you copy it to an actual DVD without re-rendering the project. (DVDs don't really hold 4.7GB... The marketing people have a funny way of measuring GB.)
The length of the AVI's is 1h30m and 2h.
You are trying to squeeze 3.5 hours onto a single-layer DVD???? You will need to use a low bitrate, and you may not be satisfied with the resulting video quality. Here's an online Bitrate Calculator that can help you choose the correct bitrate for a given playing time.

In the end, the real file size on the DVD is determined by the real combined audio & video bitrate and the total playing time. Bitrate is measured in kbps (kilobits per second), and this can be mathematically scaled-up to Gigabytes per hour. ...But, that doesn't tell you how much temporary hard disk space Movie Factory needs, or how much space it thinks it needs.

First I'd like to thank you all for the attention.

About the 3hs on a single layer DVD, I do that all the time, no problem with that. I was just wondering why MF need so much space to work? I don't see that in the other software I that I have here (don't know if naming it is ok).

I'll do that, I'll finish the project and see what happens, just need to make some room on my fully loaded HDD's, lol...

Thanks again.
