Importing DVD

Post by jake7363 »

Hello,
I have VS ver 9.0. I am trying to import a song from a DVD, including the subtitles. I checked the dialog box and it shows a subtitle stream, but when I import the file, the subtitles are not present.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance...

I don't think you can import the subtitles from a DVD (using VS9's DVD Import function).

WARNING - I have never done anything with subtitles, so the following may be totally wrong! :P

This is going to be difficult... :(

I think it would be easier to re-create the subtitles from scratch.

Video Studio 11 and Movie Factory 6, claim they can create subtitles. But, I'm not sure if these are "true" DVD style subtitles that can be selected from a menu and turned on & off with the DVD remote. (I couldn't find anything in either user manual about making a subtitle menu button.) You might download the trial version of VS11.

Ulead Ulead DVD Workshop is a high-end "prosumer" DVD authoring tool, and it can create true DVD subtitles, but it is an aging, neglected program. DVD Lab and Adobe Encore can also make true DVD subtitles.

You may be able to find some "DVD hacking" tools that will allow you to extract the subtitles from the stream and re-use them. The good news is that most of these tools are free. The bad news is that they are not easy to use, and it will probably require a lot of study and experimentation, and several different tools to accomplish the task (if it can be done at all).

There are "subtitle ripping" programs, and a quick search turned-up SubRip. You can find others if you search.

Some other popular tools are PCGedit, IFOedit, and VOBedit.

Extracting Subtitles

Post by jake7363 »

Thanks for all the info...looks like I will have to upgrade a bit...

In the mean time. I will simply use Ulead's concept of subtitles.

Thanks again.
