transition effect not working

I have Video Studio 10 plus and I am having trouble with putting in my transitons. I have set the preferences and ticked the box with says use default transition and set it to random before I started editing my project, sometimes they will work and then when I try to use one that I have already inserted again this message crops up:- " The duration of the inserted effect clip is too long. It will be trimmed to fit."

However the trimmed transition is much too short and when I try to increase the timing it won't do it. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong please?

That happens when one or both of the clips that the transition is being inserted between is too short.

A transition simply causes 2 clips to overlap. If the transition is one second long, then it overlaps half a second of the end of clip 1 with half a second of the beginning of clip 2. If clip 1 or clip 2 is half a second long or less then it won't work.

So, in essence, what VS is doing is automatically trimming your transition to make it fit between the clip(s) that's too short.

Some of your clips are just too small - perhaps a second or less.
If they are that short you might as well delete them - they will have gone off screen before your audience has had chance to take the image in.

Thank you all for your help. I have deleted the very short clip and the transistion works fine.
