The default settings seem to be LPCM ... but Trevor says this is not for PAL users.
I couldn't find that statement from Trevor in a very quick look at his site. As for uncompressed video, as far as I am aware, that produces uncompressed AVI files, which are huge. There is no alternative but to use a compressed format (mpeg-2 but also DivX for players rated to play it) for DVDs.

Here is the quote from Trevor's tutorial:

I make my own templates
Using the Make Movie Manager
These are the typical settings I would use.

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Field Order A ( Lower) ( for digital source)
(DVD-PAL), 4:3 --16:9 ( Dvd-Ntsc for US)
Video data rate: 6000 kbps (for up to 90 mins movie)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
Or
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R) (using VS 9)

LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo(for Ntsc / US)

This clearly indicates that PCM is for NTSC. But like yourself I have been using PCM (or AC3) which I thought was the best codec for audio.
You didn't mention whether you tick the DVD-VR box. I hesitate because I'm not sure what it means. Trevor ticks it on the Project Options page but not on his Template page. Jerry Jones never ticks it. Hence the confusion in my mind. Of the three work flows I've found - Steve's, Trevor's and Jones's I find Jones the clearest and easiest to follow. His site is well done. I don't yet know if there is much difference in the three methods - I haven't yet studied them properly.

Well, it's not for me to explain Trevor's statement. Taking a wild guess, though, it could be read as meaning that you can use both Dolby and mpeg layer 2 audio with PAL if you are pushed for space. But if you are using NTSC, then if for some reason you can't use Dolby, then mpeg layer 2 is not part of the NTSC DVD standard, so your only alternative would be LPCM.

But that in no way alters my view that LPCM is the absolute standard audio for both PAL and NTSC. I am sure that Trevor will jump in here if he thinks I am wrong.

As for the DVD-VR box, I did not say anything as I have nothing sensible to say. I never tick the box, but that is not based on any specific information. I just don't do it and don't have any problems by not doing so with the equipment I use...

For moment I thought I had lost my reply I posted, then I realised you have two very similar threads running.

Hi

Lpcm ¡VMpeg audio or Digital Dolby

Earlier versions of VS only gave two options Mpeg and Lpcm.

As far as I am aware Mpeg audio should not be used on Ntsc (US standard) but is suitable for Pal.

Lpcm can be used on both Pal and Ntsc, it is a Ntsc standard unlike Mpeg.

I choose Mpeg for my audio standard.
Clear as mud.

If you find my quick guide site confusing then I apologise, but be aware that these are the settings that I use.

Later versions of VS allowed the use of Digital Dolby. This is the option I now take.

DVD-VR compliant
I am not 100% sure what effect this option has, by selecting it, it does have some effect on the audio options.
My choice to select this option may have been prompted by its name ¡¥compliant¡¦. Like Ken I have no problems with my choice.
Both options seem to have NO adverse effect.

Steve
I to got confused with the similar threads, it may be best if one could be locked.
