Can you solve this riddle?

Post by jesseforrest »

Hey Guys,

Can you help me?

I have done some editing with ulead
and I'm paying a professional editor
to put the menu together for a DVD.

I saved my audio and video clips
(as he requested) and posted them to
him as a data DVD. However, he is
having trouble putting them together.

Here's what he recently asked me to do ...

"you need to export separate video and audio streams of a project that can be imported into DVD Studio pro"

How do I do that on ulead?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :-)

FCP's DVD authoring app huh...:)

Well the only format that comes to my little mind, is DV type2. It will have 2 audio streams, 1-multiplexed with the video, and 1-separate audio stream.

I've never attempted this, so I don't really know if it will do what you need it to do.

Share>Create Video, Custom. Then in the Save As dialog, make sure AVI is selected. Then press the Option button. Go to the AVI Tab, and in the drop down menu for Compression, select DV Video Encoder Type-2.

FYI, I deleted your other duplicate post. Please do not double post.

As a matter of interest, why are you getting a professional to do the menu? You can make pretty professional-looking menus using the Video Studio Smart Menus in particular, which are almost infinitely customisable.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for accidentially posting twice.

Ken, I'm getting a professional to do
the menu because I don't have time
to figure out how to do it myself on ulead.

And vidoman, thanks for the helpful advice (as usual).
I noticed that you recommended exporting it in an
AVI format. Won't that make the files too big to fit
on a DVD for me to post to my editor? Or if you know
how to compress those AVI files, then I'd love to know that too.

Thanks again guys :-)

"you need to export separate video and audio streams of a project that can be imported into DVD Studio pro"
This is called "Elementary Streams" and is used by many other editors. Although your dvd producer can simply tell his dvd authoring module to use the audio in the video file by loading the video file into his audio section separately.

In VS "Share -> Create sound file" [Save As Type]=wav, click on the options and make sure to use pcm with 48khz 16bit stereo and save your sound file With the Same Name as the video file which you will do next.
Example: xyz.wav

The next step is "Share -> Create Video File -> Custom" [Save As Type]=mpg.
Then Options "General track make this Video Only, make all the other necessary settings to export a dvd compliant mpeg2 file. Then make sure to assign the same name to the video as the sound file. His dvd authoring module will look for the same name sound file when he loads the video file. If VS assigns the extension of mpg to the file then change it to MPV (mpv).
Example: xyz.m2v
Video Only = xyz.mpv
Sound file = xyz.wav

I know, doesn't sound simple, but you asked. Also the person making the dvd should be able to use a straight mpeg video file. If he knows what he's doing he could split the video & audio for you either way to get it to work in his program. But in most of those programs you simply load the standard mpeg file twice, once for the video & once for the audio section.

The professional was in effect asking you to do something rather more complicated in some respects that learning how to build a prefessional-looking menu in Video Studio! And I am sure he will charge you a lot more too...

And I agree with etech that he should in any case have been able to work with the type of mpeg-2 file produced by Video Studio which, after all, is fully DVD compatible...

If you've edited the video yourself you've done the hardest part and now your passing the easier part - authoring - on to someone else!!
Give him the sack and do it yourself.
:D :D :D

Here's a few pointers:
Authoring a DVD
Sharing: Burn DVDs - Menus and Chapters ** Video
Sharing your videos ** Video
VS9 Ch 8 - Sharing Your Movie ** Video
Authoring a DVD ** Video
