Converting MPeg 2 to AVI

Post by chip »

I was wondering about converting my mpeg2 video format files with Dolby 5.1 to dv avi to edit with in VS11 Plus. Does anyone know of a good conversion utility that will do this?

You can find one in our Free Stuff for use with Ulead Products forum.

Here's one that is recommended by several of us:

Steve,
I have written a small but very useful utility sdcopy that can convert JVC's and Panasonic's MOD-files to mpeg2 files. It would be nice if you can add it to the free-stuff thread.
Latest version can be downloaded here:
http://zyvid.com/smf/index.php?action=d ... 0.0;id=202

A summary what it does:
-searches a given folder(and all its subfolders) for files with a given extension(MOD) and copies them to a single destination folder
-renames the copied files with its filedate, a user text and a given extension(MPG)
-can correct the 16:9 widescreen flag that all JVC(Everios) and Panasonic mpeg2 camcorders do not set
-integrated thumbnail browser to manually select individual files

In addition, I want to mention that the free frameserver software from debugmode(and all other debugmode software) seems to be not listed in the free-stuff thread.
http://www.debugmode.com
Sorry if this is a little bit off-topic here
Regards

Chip -- what is your ultimate intention for the video? To burn to DVD? If so, I would leave it in its mpeg-2 mode. There will be loss of quality in converting it to DV, and then further loss in converting it back to mpeg-2 for burning to DVD...

But experiment and see what you think...

Yeah, I see this conversion thing is going to be more of a headache than just putting up with the original mpeg files that the camcorder provides. I was just doing some research on video editing on different forums like "videohelp.com" (I think was the name), Adobe, etc. and they all agree mpegs are not the way to edit. But I really hate to lose quality too.

I tried "Super" (still trying it) like Videoman suggested but for some reason the sound doesn't carry over on my Vista machine...but it will work on the XP machine(?). That is frustrating for me as I built the Vista machine as sort of my "hot rod" flagship for video production.

Anyway, to answer your question Ken I want to produce video to burn to DVD. I just bought this Sony SR-300 camcorder which records in mpeg 2 but I'm seriously thinking of ditching this one and getting a HD camcorder that does DV.

Thanks guys...I'm kind of learning as I go here so I'm sure that I am messing up somewhere along the line. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Dont bother

Edit in mpeg format.

render to 'same as' 'first video clip'

This should keep your properties correct. The resultant video should be good.

Avi is better quality that Mpeg.
But reverting from Mpeg to Avi does not improve quality.
You have to start with Avi.

The audio conversion would present a problem...

DV does not support full 5.1 channel audio. DV allows 2 channels at 48 kHz, 16-bit, or 4 channels at 32kHz, 12-bit.

And, SUPER's DV encoder seems very limited. It won't accept the proper resolution or aspect ratio for NTSC video.

Ok guys I'll stick with the mpeg2's. It is a bigger nightmare trying to work with these avi files with the dolby 5.1 and Vista.

Again thank you for the support!
