Okay, to get the basics out of the way first:
Video Studio version: 7.0
Nature of the problem:
I'm using a Dazzleport DVC 80 USB capture device, which is connecting a DVD player to my computer. I can only get audio while capturing by pointing the sound to my Santa Cruz soundcard, as opposed to the Dazzleport audio. This is fine except when I do that, the video and audio both capture at double speed. If I point the sound to the "Dazzleport" option, the video captures normally but I get no sound.
Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?)
Capture off a DVD to AVI format (no compression)
What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
LG DVP-L36 DVD player, connected with red, yellow and white audio/visual cables to Dazzleport DVC 80 [listed in my device manager as Dazzle DVC 80 (2) #4] capture device via USB to my Dell desktop PC
Project Settings
Default VideoStudio settings
Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)
*.AVI
PAL or NTSC
NTSC
Error Codes (if any)
None.
In the options tab of VideoStudio's capture window, I have three options for audio:
Santa Cruz (tm)
DVC 80 16 K 16bit Audio (2)
Dazzle DVC 80 Audio (2)
The only one that gives me sound is Santa Cruz. However, this has the bizarre side effect of causing audio and video to record in a double-speed, garbled mess. Choosing either of the other two sound options gives me normal video capture, but no sound.
I'm completely stumped by this. Any input would be appreciated!

I posted an answer that might interest you in this thread:

With the way video capture programs are designed, USB devices suffer from more incompatibilities.
My own USB capture device experience:
A friend gave me his Adaptec USB GameBridge capture device because it wouldn't work on his system. The software which came with the card (InterVideo Home Theatre) didn't work properly on my desktop, and 3 other computers that I've tried. I've tried other TV/capture programs (about a dozen) and ran into sound or video problems, but the GameBridge TV/video viewing worked with a small test program that I made. So now I have to make my own TV viewing/capture program. Most of the programs that I downloaded worked with my ATI TV Wonder Pro PCI card though.
Edit:
I forgot to mention that Video Studio 11 allows you to select which sound input to use, so you can connect the audio to your sound card's AUX or Line In jack and then you should be able to get the sound to work.

That seems to be what's happening, yes. The software and hardware just aren't getting along
Follow-up: A little program called "MovieStar 5" came with the Dazzle capture device. When I tried capturing with that, everything was fine, both audio and video together. They really do mean for you to use the software they provide, no matter how limited it might be.
In light of this, are there any capture device people have used or heard of that DO work with mulitple software packages?

It is recommended to use the software that came with your device for capturing. Once captured you can import the files into VS for editing.

PCI capture devices are more compatible than USB ones, and the price of the device doesn't relate to better compatibility.
Video cards play a large role in the compatibility department, so it would be difficult for anyone to recommend a video capture card that would work perfectly with most of the capture software. Also, the various capture software from one company can give different results. I tried all the InterVideo products with video capture and each program performed differently. I know that it isn't the GameBridge drivers because some other people were able to get it to work perfectly with the included InterVideo Home Theatre program. This is why I consider a person to be lucky if he/she bought a capture device and the included software installs & works perfectly on his/her system.
What it really comes down to is crappy programming. I've been programming in Windows for 15 years and watched the quality of code go from bad to freaking pathetic.
