Have you tried either or both of these things: first, connect your camera (switched off) via firewire to the computer, then switched it into PLAY mode. In my case, Windows usually then tells me it can see the new device (i.e. the camera) and what do I want to do, presenting me with a list of programs I can open to interact with the camera. I then choose "Capture with VS11.5" and the program opens and also sees the camerA.

The alternative is to already have VS open, then connect your camera and switch it on. VS can take up to 30 seconds to recognise it in Capture mode, but that also works for me.

Ken,
Thanks for the advice.

I tried both instructions but no joy. I tried different variations of camera being turned on beofre and after VS11 started. Connecting camera before and after VS11 started, still no success.
VS8 has no issues also Windows XP standard movie maker has no problems capturing direct from my cam.

While the camera is connected via firewire and in play/pause mode I noticed that the camera would switch into stop mode when ever I tried to change the Device Contol Options in VS11 or clicked on the minimize details icon ( looks like an upside down sargents stripes at RH side of duration counter on capture mode ). I'm assuming that VS11 must have some link with the camera to enable this, just not the right link to enable capture.

Rick.
