Newbie Problems with Sony DCR-HC38

Hello Everyone, I am new to this site as well as camcorders and video editing. I am using a Sony DCR-HC38 to recorder and Ulead VideoStudio 11 to download and edit my movies. I am using a USB cable to connect my camcorder to the computer. I am finding that when I am viewing the movie on the camcorder it is a really good picture. I have no trouble getting the movie to record to my computer but once I do I find the play back on the computer to be somewhat choppy. I can't figure out why this is.....I was told that miniDvs would give video good picture quality and that they are simple to use. Please help me to fix this choppy problem.
