ULEAD 11 + - Crash when creating ISO or Disc

Post by konmanos »

I have been working on a video that I wish to create a Disc from with menus.
The video 14Gb big and I have plenty of Gb free for working.

When creating DISC - it completes to 100% of converting then the application shuts down. (no DVD created)

When creating ISO - it completes to 100% of converting then the application shuts down. (no ISO image created)

Please Read This Before Posting

Your post is very unclear 14 GB of what? hopefully DV(avi) but we are in trouble of its 14GB of MPEG2. Have you followed the Suggested Workflow?

Apologies - act of desperation and lack of sleep.

Nature of the problem - Attempting to convert MPG (14Gb) to a DVD with menus added.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?)
MPG - created using a passthrough connection from VHS (original) through DV (via firewire) to PC.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
VHS tape-recorder (playing the original movie) connected via passthrough to Canon DV (via RCA plugs). Canon DV connected to PC via Firewire, and using VS 11 to capture and create MPG.

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD) - DVD

PAL or NTSC - PAL

Error Codes (if any) - none (crash only of the application)

Sorry but standard DVD discs only hold 4.3 GB
Dual layer just under 9GB.
Put simply - you are trying to put too much onto one disc.

Apologies - however based on the information that I have provided you are quite right. The source file is however 14Gb - I have spliced this down so that I get a number of DVDs produced - all with menus - that will allows for 4.7Gb DVDs to handle.

- I therefore am in the Create Disc area and am able to see that the selected movie will fit under the 4.38 threshold.

- I am then provided with the screen to create the menus - which I do.
- I am then provided with the screen to create disc, iso etc. - I select to create the DVD folders and the disc image - all of which have plenty of room to create the required files. (no error messages on disc space - usually red).

I then select "Burn" and it tells me that the following will take some time to render. I accept.

I am then presented with the screen
- TOTAL PROGRESS: Convert Title - progress bar

&

The Detailed progress" Converting video of the title....

When the "DETAILED progress" bar reaches 100% the application just shuts down.

It sounds rather like you have a corrupted MPEG file.
There is no need to burn a DVD folder AND an ISO file, one or the other will do.

Have you tried to burn some other video file - if so did that work or fail?

Thanks for the response. In the end I gave up and have started to re-generate the video from the VHS - using passthrough and capturing using WinDV. The last time I used Windows Movie Maker to capture it. I was told to use WinDv by one of your moderators.. I will try now and see if this makes a difference as well as making it type1 as opposed to type2.

If you are capturing in DV format -- which I would encourage -- then after you do your editing, do NOT go to Share > Create Disk. Instead, first select Share > Create Video File > DVD. That will convert the DV to DVD-compatible mpeg-2, so no conversion will be necessary -- or should happen -- in the burning phase. Once you have the mpeg-2, save your project, then open a new one. This will empty the timeline.

Now you select Share > Create Disk. The burning module will open. Insert the newly created mpeg-2 into the burning timeline. Make sure 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' is ticked in the middle icon (Project Settings) in the bottom left of the burning screen. Build your menu and burn. You will still get a 'this will take some time' message, which you can ignore. But the only conversion message you should get when you finally press the Burn button, is 'converting menu' (as the menu has to be converted to video format). But nothing else should be converted during the burning process: only the menu, then multiplexing of video and audio, and then the actual burn.

You can follow the same workflow even if your original captured video is mpeg-2. But you need to be aware that your method of capturing from an analogue source via passthrough to mpeg format puts enormous demands on your computer resources. And it increases the possibility that you might occasionally be capturing video which is corrupt in small bits.

Ken,

Much appreciated for the tips. I am at the moment in the middle of converting from analogue --> passthru ---> to computer. I will take your comments and procedure on board, as I will be doing this in about 4 hours time. Will post the results for all to benefit.

Menus

Post by konmanos »

Ken,

I followed your suggested method, and was unable to create the relevant menus. It only had one video file in the timeline and did not allow me to create the menu. I therefore jumped back out - selected the chapter points and when I selected the create disc, it was able to see the chapter points correctly. From the mpeg2 file I created it had no chapter points recognised, regardless of them being there. I have the trial version of the VS11. Is there a manual that comes - is available online for me to access?

When you opened the burning module, did you click on Add/Edit Chapters?
