Ok, so if I understand this right Mpeg2 files are not the best files to edit with as they are more or less a "finalized" file format. But as my video camera captures video in the mpeg 2 format what file format is the best one to convert those files to for editing on UVS 11 + and Vista? And if so, how much quality in video or sound would be lost by the time you convert it to HQ DVD? Wma, mov., avi (which could host who knows what?)?
I guess the key is which will be the best quality and Vista friendly in order to alievate crashes and lip sync problems, etc? Or should I just stay with the mpeg 2's and pray a lot?
Question for the pros...

You can try editing in mpeg2. Some people have problems with it, some don't. No sense converting it if you don't have to.
If you do wish/need to convert it I would convert to dv-avi, do your editing, then convert back to mpeg2. There will be some loss, but I don't know it would be visible to the naked eye. Only you can be the judge of that.

99% of the time my source files are dv-avi.

I agree with Black Lab. Try editing the MPEG first to see if you experience problems. If you don't have problems then you should stick with the original source format until you produce the end result. I'm not a fan of editing compressed files like MPEG but you have to deal with the hand you're dealt.
Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop
