Disc Burning Failed

Post by mrsbloomsburybarton »

I have tried to burn a project onto a DVD but the message 'Disc Burning Failed has appeared, with the error code 534:-2147216291:0

The project consisted of twelve ten avi files each previously made with VideoStudio and two mpeg files also edited with Video Studio.

I have previously burned a small number of discs successfully but maybe not the above combination.

Not quite sure what you are trying to burn here. A project is a set of instructions rather like a reciepe in a cookbook
What is a project file?

12 10 avi files. Sorry but I don't understand that phrase.

If you are creating a Video DVD then you are advised to convert your avi files to MPEG2 using the [Share : Create Video] function. Clear your timeline - quickest way it use use [File : New] - goto the [Share : create Disc] option and then import those MPEG2 files.

With the apparant large number of files in your project (14?) then you need to work out the appropriate bit rate settings before creating those MPEG2 files:
What bit rate settings should I use - and don't forget to allow an overhead for the disc space used up by the DVD Menu pages themselves.

Disc Burning Failled

Post by mrsbloomsburybarton »

Thanks for your help and sorry I haven't quite picked up the jargon! The second line was a typo. What I was trying to do was create a disc using 12 videos of an average length of around 5-6 minutes, following the intructions under 'Burning a DVD...' starting on page 118 of my user guide.

I have since converted the avi files into mpeg2 as you suggest but have got the same result and the same error code.

There appeared to be ample spare room on the disc and I received no warning so did not adjust bit rate settings. I have successfully burned discs recently using only one piece of video which would seem to rule out the suggestions on your extensive lists unless of course, I've missed something!

Is there anywhere to find the meaning of the error code?

How long does it take for that error message to appear? After you press the Burn button, do you see any other messages, such as 'converting video'? (You shouldn't as no video conversion, except for the menu, should be occurring during the burning process.)

Can you also confirm that when you tried the suggested method of first converting all your files to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 (Share > Create Video File > DVD), that you saved the project. Then you opened a new project, (don't worry about giving it a name), and then selected Share > Create Disc. The burning module would then have opened with an empty timeline, and you used the Add Media button to insert the new mpeg-2s into the burning module timeline. Then you built your menus and burned? (You should also have checked to ensure 'do not convert compliant mpeg files' was ticked in the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen...)

Finally, in order to avoid wasting discs, on the final burning page, select 'DVD Folder' as the target, rather than the DVD burning drive. That way, you will end up with a Video_TS folder in your working directory. You can open this in any DVD player software (like WinDVD or Power DVD or WMP) to see if everything is OK. If you still get the burning error message, then we will need to look more closely at the steps you took before that, and in particular at the various project and other properties you used.

If you don't get the message, then that would suggest that it may be either a problem with your driver or, more likely, with the blank disks you are using on it. You can then try burning the Video_TS folder to disc using a third-party software package like Nero. Using an RW disk first for this would also save wasting blanks.

Incidentally, no one over the years has ever, as far as I am aware, discovered where Ulead might store a list of error messages and what they mean.

Several messages appeared. Two bars appear on the screen, total progress and detailed progress. 'Total' had reached 99%, 'detailed' was currently "recording to disc" (I think) and had got around 75% of the way across this before the 'disc burning failed' message appeared.

The disc produced appeared almost complete and would play on my seperate DVD player. The whole menu appeared correctly and all the videos played with the exception of the very last (twelfth) one which played about half way through before freezing. I have made previous attempts with less pieces of film and they also have worked except fot the final one.

Yes, I did all that.

I didn't check that but I've looked just now and found it ticked. I presume this means that it's ticked by default?

I tried this. I got the message 'operstion successfully completed' and found the Video_TS folder. I right clicked on this and selected 'play with Windows Media Player' but got a message saying 'WMP encountered a problem while playing the file'.

My DVD writer has worked correctly previously when using my free version of Pinnacle and has successfully burned discs with Studio 10 where they only contained only one video. I have a spindle of 100 discs which is about half used and have used successfully in the past.

It's always possible that the 12th video is corrupt in some way -- and that could be the reason why WMP came up with the message it did, though I somehow doubt it.

Do you have any other software DVD player like the free WinDVD which came with either VS10 or 11? Or PowerDVD? That will likely give you a better idea as I find WMP rather difficult even with Video_TS folders which play fine on other DVD software players and indeed on burned DVDs...

You might want to prepare a Video_TS folder without the 12th video and see if that works.

Another possibility is that the 12th video just tips the whole disc over the limit of what can be fitted on a single layer disc. But usually, you would get an insufficient memory message and the burn would not even begin...

And yes, 'do not convert' is ticked by default, but sometimes people play around with these settings, and that is why we always ask...

Disc Burning Failed

I managed to transfer all the mpeg2 files to my children's computer using our home network. The disc burned like a dream up there. I presume this indicates a hardware problem?
