No sound on clips imported from my JVC Everio camcorder

The Sound of Silence

When I import the MOD files from my JVC Everio GZ-MG77EK camcorder they display fine within VideoStudio 11 but there is no sound. The sound is there when I play the files back on the camcorder itself so I must be doing something wrong when importing the files into VS11. Can anyone please suggest what the cause of this lack of sound might be?

I might add that I have tried renaming some of the MOD files as mpg. They play OK (i.e. with sound) in Windows Media Player (albeit with their 16:9 ratio distorted) but when I try to play them within VS11, the program immediately crashes every time.

If it's relevant, I am running Windows Vista.
