Preview Main Timeline problem

I am using MSP8 on a win2000 based 2.5ghz PC with 512k memory, working with AVI files, and i have a problem with the main timeline preview.

When a set the mark-in and mark-out on the "Preview-Main Timeline", and then click the second-from-the-left 'play' arrow, now a box comes up (showing frame marks and '1/2x') and it tries to do a final render of the specified section (much like it does when creating an output AVI files). Basically it's not rendering "on the fly" anymore. My MSP8 didn't used to do that, so i must have changed something by accident. I have been through all the preview options, and i can't seem to fix this.

Any ideas on how to rectify this?

Nevermind!
'quickplay' or 'instant play' must be checked in the preview timeline option menu.
