Should you use TFF for HDV to DVD burns?

Post by jmone »

I keep most of my video in its native form on an HTPC but I take it that when I need to Burn a DVD from HDV footage that the "best" template settings would be "Top Field First" given that is the order in HDV but I notice that the included DVD Templates all use BFF.

The settings I have created for my HDV to DVD Disk Template is:
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps, Upper Field First, (DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Any advice is welcome! (like should I just output frame based?)

Thanks
Nathan

EDIT: I am using a PAL Canon DV20 that records to tape using the 1440/1080i/50Hz HDV Standard. Now I've also used the cameras internal 25P setting for much of the shooting so I have a combo of 50i and 25p based content inside the HDV 1440/1080i/50Hz stream.

If your source file is upper field first then your output file should be upper field first.
If your source file is lower field first then your output file should be lower field first.

I've heard it's not good practice to mix HDV & DV on the same tape.
I guess you haven't had any problems.

Thanks for the confirmation and why I created the DVD Template for UFF!
