smart remove is disabled

Post by Helge »

I wanted to remove some persons from an image with smart remove. (PI11) I have two images from the scene, both scanned from slides. My problem is that the menu entry "smartremove" is disabled.
Is this because I have only two images? As far as I understand the manual it should work with two images also if I use manual mode. Or is it a problem with the file type? I tried with psd, jpg and tiff. Or is it because my files dont contain exif information?

According the built in help file in PhotoImpact 12:

1. Open at least two EXIF images of the same image size, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO values.

Thanks Steve,
I had read this also in the manual, but I didn't take it so verbose and serious. I understand that this are preconditions for good results but I thought it to be the responsibility of the user - not that PI would verify it.
According to exif spec both jpg and tiff are exif formats (even if the dont contain exif information).
Since I scanned the images (coolscan iv, silverfast) it's very unlikely they have even the same size. It's much more likely the size varies a few pixels. (Also this would be the easiest one factor to adjust.)
While I could use an exif tool to fake the information I will simply use an other technik.
I hope Ulead will make this functionality easier to use in future versions.

Bill,

I think when you duplicated your original image inside of PI-12, it stripped all the EXIF data. Thus PI thinks you don't have at least 2 images having the same EXIF data, and will not activate the Smart Remove tool.

Try taking 2 pictures without changing the camera's settings, and see if that activates the Smart Remove tool.

Hi Bill,
it will generally not be possible to remove anything if you duplicated the image. Why? Because the images need to be different.
Suppose you want to take a foto of a historical building. Unfortunatly peaople are walking before it. So if you are not a so important fotographer that the police will hold people off while you take your snapshot you have only the chance to take multiple fotos. With little luck parts covered from unwanted people on one picture are not covered on an other. So you can overlay the images and cut the persons you do not want. You can do this with nearly any image edding application, but usually the images differ slighly in lighting / color, (because e.g. of moving clouds), so you have to adjust hue, brightness ... Here is where PI helps, automating this job.

@Neel

Your first link http://takeoneflix.com/ulead-photoimpac ... e-objects/, opens, however clicking on the video to play it, gets a No Entries Found message.
