PI 10 hangs on autosave

Post by mdahmke »

I'm running PI 10 ESD with the latest patch. After installing a new 160GB drive, with 100GB and 60GB partitions (NTFS) the autosave feature of PI has caused my Windows 2000 workstation to hang. This only happens if I am editing a file that is located on the 100GB partition. If I open a file on another drive it works fine. This is with autosave turned on... if I disable autosave it also works ok.

I also have Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional installed. Once when it autosaved, it showed that it was waiting for a virus scan from Norton, and hung at that stage.

Since this all started when I installed the new drive, I'm thinking that it has to do with the larger partition size. I scanned the drive for errors, and also defraged it, but that did not help.

thanks

Updated both Windows 2000 and Norton to the latest version?

Microsoft Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

For Norton, you can use the LiveUpdate feature in Norton AntiVirus to update it to the latest version.

Hope this helps.

I have a Maxtor that will do the same, 200 gig.

I found that I needed to apply a patch from Maxtor to update my Registry to accept drives larger than 136 gig.

Problem stops. Hope this helps.

Good thinking, keenart, but, because the drive is partitioned, there is no drive bigger than 136 Gig.

I think the problem may be found with Norton. I for one, will not use NORTON on my system. Having said that, my system for PI and video editing does not have any of these issues because I do not run a virus scanner or firewall on it. It is not connected to the web and never will be.

It may not be as critical to PI, but for video work, you do not want to have virus scanners, especially as invasive as NORTON, hugging system resources.

The auto save function in PI has also caused a lot of grief to other users, you can find out about these by searching the different forums on the web. I prefer to save manually and have the auto save option turned off. If you are working with a large image and the system tries at the same time to do an auto save, all things are possible...

Heinz-oz, yeah, probably right about the drive.

NORTON, I could burn my disc!!

Sorry to change the subject, Maybe this will help. You are right about the Resource Hog Norton, especially ccApps.exe which is the cause of most major crashes.

I found a solution to this problem from Microsoft.

Apparently when XP is trying to write to the Registry, so are a dozen other programs, because ccApps is three times large than other programs is slows or stops other programs from writing to the Registry therefore causes a crash.

solution: The User Hive Profile CleanUp Service. This program has stopped 99% of all of the crashes I used to have.

If you care to know my solution? I won't use it. It is too complex for what it is supposed to do. I use a good virus scanner, have used the same for years, get regular updates of virus signatures, sometimes twice in a day, never had a virus infection, scans my e-mails on download and stops any threat in its tracks. The firewall I use is also available as freeware for non commercial use, but I use the paid "Pro" version because I do my surfing on my business laptop.
That's all I ever need, tried NORTON in the past because it comes pre-loaded on many a new computer. Found the hassles it's causing far outweighing any benefit.
