The format has still not been ratified even though MPEG have accepted HD as the format Blue Ray is pushing forward with a lot of the movie studios opting for that format for the home DVD market as well as pushing record-able media & OEM's producing cheap Blue Ray players for sale. I am involved in the service industry and when a new Blue Ray movie is released only then are the OEM produced player start developing problems in playback and have to release a service update (Rom Flash File). It would be nice if all parties could get together and rat it out for once and for all.
It is a headache every week when a new change has to be adopted. The Motion Picture Expert Group sets the standard the OEM signs an agreement to produce a product that plays only that standard then why are not the DVD Movie Producers sticking to this when burning a movie. MPEG have made a decision to accept HD as the standard not Blue Ray but they are trying the war like VHS to Beta format war to win the day. Decide and lets get on with it.

Toshiba Forgets HD-DVD. Remembers DVD
Toshiba got its clock cleaned by Sony by supporting the HD DVD format over Sony's Blu-ray discs. But the next-generation video war really didn't have any winners. Even with HD DVDs out of the running, Sony can't seem to sell enough Blu-ray players to afford enough red ink to print a chart of how bad they're doing with the format; if it wasn't for the Blu-ray player in the Playstation 3, next to no one would have one. And now Toshiba's back, and angling towards fighting the next-gen hi-def wars one more time: Let's go back to watching standard DVDs, played back in Toshiba's Extended Detail Enhancement players (XDE).
Press Release: Toshiba 'Breathes New Life' Into DVD with XDE(TM) Technology.
