I am looking to cut the background from some images is PhotoImpact any good at that

I would answer yes to that..

Smart Remove.

With any image editor, it also depends on the complexity of your image. If the background that you want to remove is very busy (has a lot of different objects, colors, etc.,) and your main object (what you want to keep) is complex, then it will require some work.

What OS are you running, XP or Vista? You can download a TBYB (trial) version of PI-12 and see if it will do what you want it to do. Word of warning though, some have had problems getting the TBYB to install and work on Vista. With the "Vista Patch" it is suppose to run on Vista, BUT patches will not install on the trial versions.

Binned Vista had loads of problems with it

Yes, actually there are several ways to extract your background or foreground image, but of course this always depends on the sophistication of the details.

You can use the Lasso Tool, Beizer curve tool or smartremove if you had taken multiple pics.
