UVS10 - Jerky Capture with (DVD-PAL) Full Frame

Post by duel »

Hi Guys!

Thanks to the forum regulars, I have reached a basic understanding to the capture process through a previous thread, but have now hit this rather fundamental problem.

Capture is smooth with the smaller frame size, but really I need the full frame size to do things properly. Unfortunately when I attempt to do so the capture is all over the place where it pauses for a second, then runs quickly trying to catch itself up. Audio is broken.

Here's my rather crude setup;

Samsung VP-L700 8mm analogue camera which uses Hi8 tapes
ADS VideoXpress Capture box

Here are the capture properties;

and finally the captured clip properties;

Is there anything amiss from these settings? Or is the hardware I'm using not up to the full-frame requirements? Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Adstech is a company which produces good capture devices, but it is notorious for linking many of its devices to its own software or tweaking other software so that it will work with Adstech hardware. I don't know about VideoXpress in this regard, but most Adstech devices usually came with the Adstech capture program called CapWiz, and would only work with that software. Up to a couple of years ago, their devices were often also accompanied also by an older, crippled (and more recently, trial) version of Video Studio which they used to tweak to work with the device. But of course users of later versions of VS found that their newer versions would not work properly with the hardware device because Adstech would not share their proprietary secrets! :cry:

Our usual advice to Adstech users is therefore to use the software which came with the device to capture, but then to transfer those captured files to Video Studio and do the editing in that.

You can also visit the Adstech website and download CapWiz and older drivers and patches for the earlier versions of Ulead products which used to accompany Adstech devices: http://www.adstech.com/support/Download ... D%20Xpress

Thanks for your feedback.

Unfortantely the software that came with the ADS tech box is *** .. :)

I don't know whether there would be any quality loss capturing from this software but it's not much fun to use. Perhaps it's time to invest in a new capture box.. any suggestions?

You could try downloading CapWiz from the Adstech site first -- I understand it is quite good at what it does, which is capturing...

Ironically, in all the circumstances, I would tend to recommend the Adstech DVDXpress DX2. It has an on-board chip which does the encoding to mpeg-2 there, rather than requiring computer resources. And the price is good, and quality reportedly excellent. The only downside is again the question of the capture software.

Mind you, don't be put off by the thought of having to use one program for capture and another for editing. Many of us here use a wide variety of programs in any one video project. I for instance capture from my mini DV camera using a program called WinDV, I do the editing in VS, add titles made in Cool 3D or Xara 3D, sometimes other effects in Adobe After Effects, and then author and burn with either MovieFactory or DVD Workshop (or very occasionally Nero). You will quickly learn that some programs do different aspects of any one project better than others.

Installed the software, set it up with my camcorder and hit the preview button.. then..

I have to say I'm not at all impressed with ADS Tech, I seem to get nothing but grief with them! I mean, the error message doesn't even tell me anything. Even grammar in the installation was wrong. I wonder to myself how we can trust products that can't use basic English properly! To top it all off, at the end it said "CapWiz has placed an icon on your desktop!", or something of that nature. I don't want a *** icon on my desktop! How frustrating.

I'll try reinstalling it and having another look tomorrow. Thanks for the information :)

Hi Ken

Thanks for your help thus far.

I had another go at installing and using the software with similar results. I believe the most likely cause of the software crashing is because I'm not using the hardware it was designed for.

It's rather frustrating I cannot use the product I bought but that's that. I think I'll just have to try the more current version you mentioned which works with CapWiz, and hope for the best. At least I can test it and return it should I experience problems.
