I am trying out VS11 trial and trying to edit footage from a Canon HV20 HDV camcorder. I think I need to use proxy editing because my machine does not appear fast enough otherwise. It is an Athlon XP 3000, which is 2.2 GHz, but is "supposed" to be like a 3 GHz machine. I have 1 GB RAM and am running Vista.
A few questions:
1. How long is reasonable to generate a proxy file for a clip? A 2 minute HDV clip took about an hour to generate. Seems excessive and not that useful.
2. Once the proxy file is generated, do I have to do something to tell VS to use it instead of the original file? Is there a way I can tell if the playback inside of VS is using the proxy file? When I played back a clip to preview it before generating the proxy, performance was very variable. Sometimes it plays very slowly, and sometime a little better, but never that great to make me think that I don't to use proxy mode editing. This variability in playback is making it difficult for me to tell if it is using the proxy.
3. When I capture the HDV clips from my camera, the check box to split scenes is grayed out. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Mike

I would suggest not using the proxy file if you computer is supposed to be as fast as a 3GHZ Intel. Proxy is supposed to be for computer less than 3GHZ.
I turned my proxy editing off and have no problems, my processor is 3GHZ.
HDV editing is slow, don't expect it to be anywhere near as fast as standard video.

I've a HV20 and am using VS11+ and got an answer from Ulead on the "Split by Scene" being greyed out - Unforntuanlty is not currently supported - you can run it post catpure and it will do it based on Content NOT time/date stamp (which for me is not ideal) and even then it just using mark in / mark out points. You could try using HDVSplit for capture but it does create a slightly different file format (Transport Stream) than Video Studio (Program Stream) but this may make no difference to you pending your workflow. Also some have reported that HDVSplit leave a "black" frame at the end of each segment but I did not see this personally.
