VS 11+ Crashing with Chapter editing

Post by chip »

I'm having trouble trying to move on after editing my chapters in Video Studio 11 Plus. Upon completetion of editing I go to the "next" button and nothing happens. I hit it a few more times and then it crashes telling me "Microsoft has encountered a problem with Video Studio and needs to close"

I am running Windows Vista Home premium.

Here is the file info I am trying to burn to disk...

File
File Format: NTSD DVD
File Size: 3,060,420 KB
Duration: 2734.201 seconds (45:34.06 minutes)

Video
Video type: MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First
Total Frames: 81,944 frames
Attributes: 24 bits, 720x480, 4:3
Frame Rate: 29.970 Frames/sec.
Data Rate: Variable bit rate (Max 9100 Kbps)

Audio
Audio Type: Dolby Digital Audio
Total Sampes: 131,241,642 Samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz, 5.1 channels
Bit Rate: 448 Kbps

Video was first rendered after editing by Share>Create Video File>DVD (with 5.1)

Went to File>New Project

Manually inserted the file created above

Made sure "Do Not convert compliant mpeg files" was checked

Went into Share>Create Disk mode and was finishing chapter editing. Went to click on "next" and it crashes every time.

Data Rate: Variable bit rate (Max 9100 Kbps)
Try a lower bit rate.

I added numbers in the steps you posted. Are you doing step #3 by adding the file into a VS Project timeline? If so, skip step #3, go right to Step #5 with an empty VS Timeline, and then add the file...

Hello George,
Ok, I will try that. BTW I brought my VBR down to 8000Kbps but still get the same problem.

Well if I think I understand this right I went into Share>Create Video File and saved it.

I then went to Share>Create Disk and this time did not manually insert the above file into the time line, instead I clicked on "add video" button on the Create Disk menu and selected my mpeg file. Is that correct? Anyway the program still crashes at the point where I try to move on from Chapter editing. I click on the "Next" button and nothing happens. I click it again and still the same. When I click it a third time I get the infamous "Video Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close".

The problem repeats itself whether I choose just a few chapters, no chapters, or let the program auto select chapters by scene it always crashes at the point I try to leave the Chapter editing screen. I have done 3 other videos prior to this one and have not encountered this problem until now. Two of the previous videos were taken by the same camera (Sony SR300 w/hdd and Dolby 5.1 audio) and the other video was a VHS to mpeg conversion with capwiz.

One more update...I also just tried to skip step 3 all together and just tried editing my chapters off the "raw" vsp file and go directly to Share>Create Disk. Again when I finish with the chapter edits...which by now I only threw a few in there...it crashes upon clicking the "next" button the third or fourth time. It seems it won't allow me to go from the chapter editing screen to the next screen which I believe is the actual create disk screen.

Have you tried, as a last resort, downloading/installing the latest DirectX update from Microsoft?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en

Though the update does not specifically mention the version of DirectX that is included with Windows Vista (DirectX 10), there is something in this update that corrected similar headaches that I was experiencing with Windows Vista/Ulead 11.

Ahhhh.... A hard-drive/MPEG camera!

The Corel/Ulead programs sometimes have trouble with MPEGs. This doesn't happen to everyone, or with every MPEG file. (So, there may be some small corruption in your MPEG data-structure.) Crashing is fairly rare, it happened to me a few times. "Lip-sync" problems are another more-common problem assocated with MPEG editing.

I'm not sure if editing actually causes corruption, or if it just makes it worse... I solved all of my MPEG-related problems by buying the Womble MPEG editor. I'm pretty sure Womble cannot edit 5.1 channel AC3, so this is not an ideal solution for you. I still use Ulead (usually DVD Workshop) to author and burn the DVD. And, I use still use Video Studio for other tasks.

There may be other solutions and work-arounds. If you read some of the posts related to A/V sync problems (or search the forums for "sync"), some of those suggestions/solutions (such as turning-off SmartRender) may help with your issue too. You will find that most users experiencing "lip sync" problems are working with MPEGs.)

Hey DVDDoug,

Thank you for the heads up. Since Dolby 5.1 and Mpegs are what my Sony camera gives me I may have to try something else. I appreciate the responses!

One more update:

I found a "work around" for my situation. I found that I can edit my mpeg2's on the UVS 11 +. I can go ahead and create an mpeg video file and save it to the hard drive. Ahead Nero has a new program called Nero 7 Enhanced which I used to do chapter editing and burning on the finished mpeg file without any crashes or glitches. I burned the video and was pleased with its' outcome.

It would be nice to have the one package does all like some of my previous projects but this will do for now.

The Microsoft link for me!!!!

I would open Video Studio 11 with Windows Vista, click on SHARE tab, click Create Disc, click on the film strip to add video files, click on my video file, click open. I should have gotten a preview of it in the preview window, but I did not. Clicked on Add/Edit Chapter, Auto Add Chapters, Add Chapters at fixed intervals, left the 3 minutes in there then clicked OK. Then got the message that said something like VideoStudio has encounted a problem and needs to close, add it did.
I used this same video file with VS10 and did not have any problems. So looking at the replay that said goto this Microsoft link...http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en, I downloaded and installed it and it fixed everything. :D :D
