No sound through mic Logitech 250USB

Post by alanball »

Hi all,

I have been recording sound in VS10 and just downloaded and installed Audacity to see if recording is any better. I started Audacity and spoke into the mic and it started recording but the sound was low, I tried to adjust the volume control in Audacity for the mic but the volume slider just kept going back to Zero.

I opend the windows audio properties panel to see if I could adjust the volume and also did the windows test to ensure that the mic and head phones were working OK, which they were.

I went back into Audacity to see if there was any increase in volume but now I can't get any sound throught the mic in either Audacity or VS10.

I have tried everything I acn think of, does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

The Windows Control Panel for Audio defaults to settings for playback.
Please confirm you selected the settings for recording.

I have created a guide here:

Hi Steve,

thanks for your reply; I think that properties box is the only one I didn go into. I did manage to get the mic working again for some reason the Logitech device was not selected for the mic input or the sound, although Windows had detected the head set when I had it plugged into the USB.

I went into Audacity and was playing around with the sound and mic controls and the same thing happened. I checked the devices and they were not selected again. I had another funny thing happen in Audacity, when I had been trying to adjust the volume level for some reason it muted the sound, so not sure what is happening. I will have to work through it in more detail when I have a bit of time to spare.

I still have not been able to get a descent volume out of the mic, the volume has to be turned fully up and then adjust in VS10 to +200 to get a reasonable volume that can be heard over the background noise in the video. Perhaps the mic is not up to scratch.

Thanks again for you time Steve.

While there might, of course, be a problem with your particular microphone, I think -- once you look -- you will find that there is a boost in Audacity which will enable you to increase the DB without undue distortion in the sound. I don't know for certain as I have never used Audacity. But I have a similar 'problem' with various (non-USB) microphones and found such a control in Nero Wave Editor, which is the program I use.

In addition, you should be able to increase the volume of your voiceovers within VS by either increasing the volume of the voice clip from the default 100 -- I think it will go up to 600. And correspondingly, you reduce the level of the background audio for the duration of the voiceover so that you can get a balance. You can also do this using the 'rubber bands' on the various tracks in Audio view.

Hi Ken,

thanks for your input, I will look for a booster in Audacity, and as you (I) said I have increased the volume in VS to +200, and as you say I could reduce the sound level of the main video, but in this case I particulaly wanted it to remain at the normal level. The sound of my recorded voice through the headphone's and that of the video cam are very different and I was trying to use Audacity to bring the two sound closer together, rather than recording the additional voice over through my cam which would be a long drawn out process.

Thanks again for your comments.
