I have a series of tif files created from a pdf. Some larger ones generate an 'insufficient memory' error. This happens despite the fact the Task Manager never reports any activity greater than 60% RAM usage or more than 10% processor usage.
I resaved the series at a lower resolution, creating files ranging from 1 Mb to 3 Mb. Some of these files open correctly, but some cause PI to hang with the only solution to kill PI.
All of these tifs open correctly in Photoshop.
I'm running Dual Xenon Dual Core processors at 3 Ghz, 2 Gb Ram, Vista Ultimate.
I've been using PI since 1999 upgrading each time a new version is availabe. It seems that this version has more problems than any version Ive used in the past.

There's a couple of things that are considerably different now compared to the earlier ones.
1. Your running a Dual Core system, which PI may not effectively and efficiently be able to take advantage of.
2. Most important is Vista. While PI-12 does have the Vista Patch, the program was not originally developed for it. Ordinarily patches should correct the problems they are designed to do. With Vista being so different then XP, where both software applications and hardware are affected to the point of having to purchase new equipment, in my opinion issuing a patch is like placing a band-aid on a broken arm, hoping that your arm will mend and work properly.
Your system certainly should be able to handle what you're throwing at it, however if the applications are not written to utilize what you have, then it is not much better then running it on a smaller/slower one.

I suspected that was the case and by watching the activity across my processors, PI does not take full advantage of mult-processors. In fact few programs do.
One of the reasons I moved to Vista is that it is supposed to make better use of the multi-processors, and I have seen an improvement. But I guess that only goes so far. The programs need to address this themselves to some degree.
I have to go through gyrations to get around my original problem, but I've got a semi solution right now. I sure wish there was an new update to PI 12 on the horizon or the less attractive alternative a new PI costing more money. But upgrading more often than once a year gets a bit prohibitive.

Make sure to press your guinea pig button to send the info for the Beta Test of Windows Vista. This quote above is now embedded into windows vistas new beta software.
Amazing we buy companies software and we work out the bugs for them. To some degree I guess that can be fine though at what expense to us the consumer that ends up paying for their troubles and costs without re-embersment. If it didn't cost us money it would be fine though it does in time, money and aggravation to say the least.
I agree that the the earlier versions were more simple for some and thats why the software became so popular, though the path I believe has led away from that idea that made ULEAD what it is today and is on a march to leave simple out .
