Studio 11 HiDEF AND 5.1 Sound

Post by Ballistix »

Oh man, yet another compromise. Can anyone tell me how to set both my movie to 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 AND have 5.1 sound. If I set the preferences to hidef MPEG2 it switches back to stereo. If I switch my sound to 5.1 it switches the video to DVD-PAL.

I give up! Why can't I encode wi9th hi def AND 5.1? Someone care to enlighten me?

Cheers

You can't encode 5.1 with a mpeg file. You can have a 5.1 dvd or a 5.1 HD DVD, you can have a mpg with a separate AC3 file, or a m2v with a separate AC3 file but you can't encode a 5.1 mpeg. I believe it has something to do with licensing issues. This is true for most if not all NLE's

Thats interesting thanks. I've captured all of my latest HDV stuff at 1440x1080 and MPEG is that going to be OK or is AVI better to capture at? I can also see that if I've already done this and I change the project properties to AVI I can then setup 5.1 as you suggest.

I see no option to select HD-DVD from my preferences though...just MPEG1 and MPEG2 and a selection of low def stuff... where do I select HD-DVD?

Interested to hear if you think the quality might be better with an AVI capture over MPEG...I was assuming not that's why I used MPEG.

Thanks

...and here's another moan...if I create DISC from the share menu it's insisting I make a low def DVD...wtf is that all about? Why can't I just drop my hidef MPG into it that I have just created? I want to use the menu system and backdrop etc to give it a nice menu...but no...it has to insist on down converting my lovely new 3.5GB hi def 1440x1080 file to normal DVD resolution....

Just to be specific. I've created a single Hi-DEF 3.5GB mpeg file. I want to be able to burn that file to a normal DVD 4.7GB for instance. But also have some menus around it...I'm guessing this isnt possible because I presume that most DVD authoring systems will want to burn it to blu-ray or hd-dvd disc types?

I guess I want the best of both worlds and can't have it. Anyone have a view?

Any thoughts? Or a good DVD authoring tool replacement?

I haven't found this to be a problem. I can encode 3 different types of audio (pcm/mpeg/dolby) to standard or highdef video mpeg files.
Are you saying it can't be done (writing a 5.1 dolby track in a mpeg file) or just that most editors don't support it. Most advanced editors prefer working with elementary streams, but I can create mpeg videos with Dolby 2/0 or Dolby 5.1 audio using the ulead products.

That video doesn't relate to the posters question.
While editing HighDef Video on the VideoStudio timeline one can only assign mpeg audio as the project settings. If one has the Project_Settings set for Highdef and clicks on the 5.1 audio the Project_Settings will be changed to SD_DVD.

You assign Dolby/lpcm/mpeg audio in the create disk module for highdef video.
Carry the project over from the timeline into the create disk module so the video will be smartrendered & change the audio to your choice.
