[Sorry if this is in the wrong section ... I'm using various ULead products, including DVD Movie Factory 3.5 and 6]
Using Video Studio 8 to capture video from VHS via Canopus ADVC-300 and FireWire, I frequently get the error message below in the XP event log. It seems that the Firewire bus is resetting itself, which stops the video capture.
When this happens, the Imaging Device in the XP Device Manager disappears. In a few seconds, the device reappears and I can restart the capture.
I have a SIIG FireWire 800 PCI-32T card, using the Microsoft Firewire 400 drivers. The Capture Service in the event log is operated by this InterVideo file:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InterVideo\DeviceService\DevSvc.exe
Having capture sessions interrupted 10-15 times a day is a MAJOR pain in the neck. Any suggestions?

Firewire bus reset???
According to the trouble shooting guide there is no fix for your problem.
Trouble shooting 1394 devices:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314873
This may help even though its to get the speed back for a 1394 device.
Service Pack 2 Firewire fix(Firewire 800).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222
If all else fails try to install a Firewire card(1394a) with a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset on it.

Thanks for the links. The SIIG card I have installed has the TI chipset. I already installed the Windows XP KB885222 update. No help. I read the troubleshooting document, and noted the bus-reset "storm". That wasn't much help, was it? Basically, Microsoft is saying, "You're screwed."
I doubt it's the SIIG card itself, because I bought two identical cards - one for work and one for home. Both have the SAME problem on different systems. A Dell GX280, and a home-built PC with an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA motherboard.
I'll try a different firewire cable and see if that helps. What a pain!
I wonder ... if I call Microsoft, will they tell me to upgrade to Vista?

This is part of MovieFactory 6. I don't see where VideoStudio 8 installs this service.Matter of fact MF6 cannot capture from similiar pass-through devices. You may have more then one problem besides the MS problem. MF6 could have installed some files that interfere with VS8 capturing service. These are shared files.C:\Program Files\Common Files\InterVideo\DeviceService\DevSvc.exe
You may get it to work in VS8 by renaming the "c:\program files\common files\ulead systems" directory. (You have to stop the ulxxxsrv.exe from running resident, can't remember the exact filename).
Stop the devsrv.exe capture service from running under services.
Then re-install VS8. (This will place only VS8 correct files in the common files\ulead systems directory).
I have a Firewire 800(1394b) PCI card installed in one of my computers, it works fine, however, I've tried it in two other computers with no luck. It has something to do with the operating system software. The card will work in my other computers if I use the Microsoft drivers not the drivers written for the card. I am not about to reinstall Windows to get the card to work properly in my other computers. They both have Firewire 400(1394a) PCI cards installed and work fine.
That is why I suggested you install a 1394a card in the one computer.

Looks like the SIIG card is defective, or just incompatible with BOTH of my computers! A new, cheap Firewire 400 card solved the problem. Encore Electronics, ENL1394-PCI. It has the VIA chipset, and works fine... Thanks to everyone who posted on this topic!
By the way, a user on the Canopus forum posted this link about Firewire 800 cards.
