Is a firewire always neccessary or is there a means of using a Usb connection and downloading VOB, BUP, IFO files to videostudio 11+?

Your camera, as far as I am aware, does not even have a Firewire connection. And that is because you normally should not have to connect the camera to the computer. What you should be doing is simply putting the mini DVD from it (perhaps after finalising it -- check the camera manual) into the computer DVD drive and copying (Insert DVD/DVD-VR) from there.
Edit: I have now looked up the specs for the camera and find that it does indeed have a Firewire connection. But my advice remains the same.
