split by scene, V11 and vista

Post by sgsusu »

Nature of the problem :
I am trying to use split by scene, using an AVI file. If I try to run it on my vista laptop it takes around 45 minutes - for 45 minutes of avi. Then when I click ok the thing hangs, even if I leave it an hour, exiting ulead and going back in I can see some of the scenes but not all.

I have tried the same thing on my xp pc and split by scene is much much quicker, although it still takes a tremendous amount of time when you click ok at the end.

Properties of your source files : avi files around 300mg
What devices are involved and their mode of connection? file already on hard drive, no devices

Project Settings : avi, pal, frame rate 24, size 720 x 576

This is a new vista laptop which runs extremely well when editing files, apart from this one aspect. Multi trimming the file is very fast and I have no other problems with it.

any ideas?

The "AVI" file could be any of a number of different file types in the AVI wrapper.
In VS right click on the file and post the properties here so we can see what they actually are.

If the file you are talking about -- the 45 minute long one -- is only 300 MB in size, then it is most definitely not either an uncompressed AVI (which would be about 65 GB for one hour) or DV/AVI (13 GB per hour). It is therefore almost undoubtedly one of the highly compressed formats like DivX or XVid which uses .avi as its carrier or wrapper extension. If so, I am frankly surprised that split by scene even worked with it at all. Those formats are essentially not made for editing but only for display after being converted from some other, more editable format.
