Avi Files

Post by dabear »

Hey guys, Msp8.0

I've been playing around with avi files and I've noticed alot of them that I try to load up play in the video but when I drop to bar the video goes black but the sound remains. I think I must need codecs.

What do you guy recommend for a nice codec pack. Drop a link to the site please.

Also what do you guys feel is better to work with mpegs or avi's?

This all rather depends upon what you intend to do with your videos.
If you are going to place them onto a traditional DVD disc then you have to create MPEG files - normally MPEG2 though you can use the inferior MPEG1 standard.

If your going to share them on the internet then you need one of the following
MPEG4 DivX Xvid Quicktime WMV

Or are you going to plonk them into your ipod or mobile phone, send them by email. Surprisingly there's a lot you can do in the way of sharing and distributing your video. The choice of codec depends on what you are going to do with it.

Im working with mpegs. I find they run smoother.

But I found an avi video file I needed and I wanted to transfer it to mpeg. I can play the file in the editor player but when i drop to time line you can hear the music but not the video. It's all black. What should I do? msp8.0

If you right-click on the clip, it will tell you the type of AVI. Do NOT buy a bundle of codecs: they are often corrupted/hacked/pirated/virus-containing. Buy the single one you need for the job. Note also that highly compressed AVIs are a devil to work with, taking much time to re-render to a more workable format.

I recommend the K-lite codec pack. I have it installed and it plays everything I have thrown at it. Just install the standard setup and you should be fine. Plus it comes with media player classic, which is a great low overhead media player.
BTW Steve, MPEG1 is not inferior, but merely different. It's only inferior if you try to use it for what MPEG2 was designed.

Hey thanks for the heads up on K-lite, I got it and it actually helped my pc out! It uninstalled all my old codecs and now it works even better. Also the avi files that didn't play in msp now do so thanks again.
