Matching Project Properties to Clip Properties

Post by astrovideo »

Hi,
I am using VS10+. Even though I have "Show message when inserting the first video clip" ticked under Preferences. I do not get propmpted when the clip I am inserting is of the following type (I do get prompted for all other types). This clip is from a VHS tape, transfered to my computer using a USB capture device - I believe it is made by ADtech.

Since I don't get prompted, I'd like to set the project properties maually to match the clip, but what should I set them to? I intend to make a DVD of the project. Here are the properties for the clip:

As far as I am aware, you only get that message when using one of the 'standard' formats. And the Intel codec you used is not regarded by VS as standard. You can of course adjust the project properties manually to reflect those of the original video.

But I guess my main query would be that if you are intending to produce a DVD, why would you want your project properties to match the original? At the end of the editing, you would still need to convert the project to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 -- and for that, you would most certainly not be using the Intel codec.

I am also surprised that your capture device used that codec. If it was an Adstech device (or indeed most others), you should be able to set it to capture to DVD format, which would automatically capture in DVD-compliant mpeg-2.

I wanted to match the clip properties simply because I thought it was the standard recommended procedure for projects - to keep the same field order and such. Even when the goal is to render a DVD-compliable MPEG file. Just like video from a miniDV camcorder isn't DVD-compliable to begin with, but I make sure the project matches the video, and THEN when rendering, I render to DVD-comliable MPEG-2 (as this forum recommends).

Perhaps if I used the software that came with the device, I would have seen more capturing options, but I used VS for the capture.
