Ulead Video Studio 8 is not cooperating.

Post by ILoveSebastian666 »

Alright this is going to be probably one of the most confusing things I've ever had to type up and I will try to make it as understandable as possible but I don't know how I am going to do so..

Okay, I have Ulead Video Studio 8 and recently I have been trying to deal with a personal project of adding two songs to a personal video I shot and making it to where one song plays at the time I prefer it to, fades out, and the other song I chose fades IN, and have it do that as much as I want it to.

NOW, the problem is I have been trying to use the trim tool to take out two areas of the clip that I want removed, BUT for some reason (here comes the complicated to explain part) whenever I am in the trim window and try to use the jog bar to go through te video to pinpoint (mark) the parts of the video that I want, the first part being between 0.00 seconds and 10.21 seconds and whenever I watch the screen as I move the jog bar, what really should've been happening at the 10 second mark was not happening, it appeared at 10 seconds in the video that the video was only about 1 second into it. I know it sounds so freaking complicated but to give an example, my boyfriend and I were goofing off in this video and he was on this little purple dinosaur rocking thing at our local park and I had set the camera down to go get on it with him which was at about 10 seconds. I have been trying to cut out the time between me setting up the camera and me going to sit down at the dinosaur just so when the clip played it would automatically show me on the dinosaur at the beginning. Get it? So yeah, tying back into my problem, whenever I scroll through the video with the jog bar, (the video is nearly 3 minutes long), I can scroll all the way across to in the 2 minute zone and my boyfriend has barely moved in the video and I am not in the video yet, as if I had only scrolled through about a second or two of the video.

Also, I just ignored it and went ahead and marked the places I wanted to cut out and before I cut them out, there is this option to watch the clip with only the selected areas and all I have to do to see it is hold shift and press the Play button. I did so, but the whole clip played anyway....

I know it's all complicated but this personal task is something that I've wanted to do and am really frustrated over because Ulead Video Studio 8 is being a butt and won't let me do so. Please help me if you can..I would really appreciate it!

It soulds like you could possibly be "zoomed in" too far. I don't remember how on v8, but on v10, above the timeline are two magnifying glass icons, one with a - in it and one with a +. Click on the one with the - and see if it will zoom out your timeline.

What format are your video files? (Do you have a MiniDV camera, a hard-disk camera, a direct-to-DVD camera, a "still" camera that also shoots video?)

Highly compressed formats (such as MPEG-4 or MOV) often cause trouble when you try to edit or convert them.

Black Lab < Hmm..is it possible to zoom out if you hadn't zoomed in?

DVDDoug < Oh crap, yeah I've been using a .MOV format from my Kodak v530 digital camera. If I convert it will that solve my problem or no? And if so, is it possible to convert it to a valid format that will not cause it to lose quality?

Thank you both!

If your camera come with any other editing software, that special software might work better with the camera's format. If your camera came with Video Studio, I don't know why they sometimes do that!
If I convert it will that solve my problem or no?
Maybe.... If, you are able to convert it. You may need to convert it anyway, depending on what you are planning to do with the file.

So, the first thing to try, would be to convert it to AVI/DV with Video Studio. (Got to the Share tab to save the file in a different format.) That might not work, since Video Studio is having trouble with the file.

If that doesn't work, there is a FREE "universal conversion" program called SUPER. SUPER is a strange program, and there's no user manual, but it's got me out of a jam a couple of times. You can try converting to AVI/DV with SUPER, but I think it only converts to PAL* AVI/DV. If you don't live in a PAL country, I'd recommend converting the file to MPEG-2. If you are not making a DVD, use the same resolution and framerate settings as the MOV file. But, use a higher bitrate (maybe 4000 - 5000 kbps.)

But, even MPEG-2 can sometimes cause trouble for Video Studio...
And if so, is it possible to convert it to a valid format that will not cause it to lose quality?
It depends... All of the video compression techniques are "lossy". (Data is throw-away during compression). So in theory, you loose quality whenever you convert. If you convert from MOV to AVI/DV or to "DVD quality" MPEG-2, you probably won't notice the loss. If you convert back to MOV, you might notice the loss. A higher bitrate for the "to" format, will help. A higher bitrate means that less data is being thrown-away (and it means bigger files).

* In case you don't know PAL is used in Europe, Australia, etc. NTSC is used in North America and Japan. (SUPER doesn't say "PAL", but the settings look like PAL.)

Alright I'm stuck at 1% in the Rendering process for converting it to .AVI. The task manager also switches from saying that Ulead is not responding to running, but whenever I look at the program it's still at 1%. Should I just leave it and let it do it's thing, or consider your other options instead?
Thank you.

EDIT: Alright I downloaded SUPER and I used the settings you stated above. Left the scale size the same, raised the bitrate up to about 3072 kbps. The output Container was set as mpeg 2, the output video codec as the only available option (mpeg-2), I thought I set the audio to mp3 but as I look at it it's at mp2 now but no matter because I Encoded it and then previewed it and the speed and sound was perfect BUT the picture was too bright and weird, like it had too much gamma or something.

Also, did this program automatically change my .MOV file, or did it save it at a different location?
