Is Firewire dead ?

Post by pyvo »

It's soon time to upgrade the old PC but I notice that fewer and fewer PCs have firewire / IEEE1394 / iLink plugs.
Is this standard now obsolete and if so, by what has it been replaced ?
My new(er) camcorder has a USB port but the older Digital8 is Firewire or analog only.

If USB is replacement, is it possible to write back to the camcorder and is it up to Firewire standards ?

What are the possibilities of HDMI ?
I assume it can transfer from latest camcorders to PC but
can that be used for transfer back from PC to camera ?

Thanks for help.

Thanks for the reassurance but why is it so hard to find a decent PC with a firewire plug on it nowadays ?
Could it be something to do with WinVista ?

It's implementation is on the decline in the near future...

Thanks for that link, obviously we will need to keep a close eye on this as it has major implications for Video Editing.
