New to the site and need help with Ulead video studio 10

Post by walshy »

I've been working with Ulead Video Studio 10 now for a while and have had a few frustrations with the outcome once on DVD i.e voices going out of sinc half way through etc.

I'm trying to burn to dual layer DVD's and Ulead doesn't recognise the discs - I've reset Biod on my DVD burner and am running a HPdesktop.

Any advice much appreciated as it is driving me mad!

What format are your video files and where did they come from? (I've had similar prolems with some MPEG-2 files... see my tagline below?)

I probably can't help you with that one... In theory, that should be handled by the firmware, driver, and operating system. Are you sure you have a dual-layer burner? Do you have any other burning software on your computer? Does your other burning software work with dual-layer discs?

Re the out of sync problem, I wonder if it has something to do with your workflow -- which you don't describe. Our recommended workflow was developed in part to avoid the sort of problem you are now experiencing, though, so you might want to think about it if you are not currently following it.

First, you capture your video. If you want the project properties to match those of the captured video, then make sure you have 'Show message when insert first video clip' ticked in File > Preferences.

2. After editing, you first convert the project to DVD compatible mpeg-2: Share > Create Video File > DVD.

3. Once you have your mpeg-2, save your project, then open a new one. Don't worry about a name for it -- the objective is just to clear the timeline.

4. Then you go to Share > Create Disc, insert your new mpeg-2 into the burning timeline, make your menu and burn. Also, make sure 'do not convert compliant mpeg files' is ticked in the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen. You should not have to adjust any of the properties in the burn module.

The advantage to this workflow is that you can check the file produced in step 2 to see if the audio and video is in sync at that stage. If it is not, and you have used SmartRender, then render it again, this time without SmartRender switched on.

I also tend, in the final step of the burning stage, tend to first produce a DVD folder (Video_TS) of the project rather than burn it directly to disc. That way you can play back the folder on a software DVD player to check again that everything is OK. If it is, I then use Nero to actually burn the folder to DVD.

It's been my experience that burning Dual Layer Dvd's can be tricky. The media should be fully supported by the dvd burner, not to mention other software that can conflict with the burning process. I've burnt many DL dvd's that appear to work correctly, even pass a verify test, but eventually have problems.

The process of finding the correct burner & media took me quite some time to get it all to work correctly.

Thanks guys for the help,

On the out of sync issue I'll try what you outline and will try not burning direct to disc. I take the video from my Sony camera that has mini discs, I then drag and drop all the relevant bit into the time line, add music and notation etc, then I burn to disc and set all the menus etc. I'll try following your suggested process.

I have the video file in 3 different formats now, Ulead 10 which is what I use, MPEG and MPEG4 to put it on my IPOD.

On the dual layer DVD challenge I did manage to burn one project direct to disc after resetting my BIOS, it took over four hours but did play on my DVD player at home with only the last 10 minutes out of sync - went back in a checked the audio and timelines and they ran perfectly in sync on the PC, I even checked again on the jogger wheel after starting the burn to disc process. The frustration is that on Monday the dual layer disks are recognised and burned, then on Tuesday they weren't recognised and I hadn't changed anything.

HP's advice was to first reset BIOS which worked the first time, I then tried a new registry patch they provided a link to for the CD/DVD to no avail and then reinstalled the drivers and still no luck. The whole dual layer thing is confusing as there doesn't seem any logic to why it sometimes works and then at other times doesn't - even with disks from the same company.

Thanks for advice again.

regards

Why are you using dual layer in the first place? How large of a file are you trying to burn? If it's not too big you could try adjusting the bit rates to make it fit on a single layer DVD, use the VS fit to burn feature, or use a third party program such as DVD Shrink.

I don't think the out of sync issue is with burning the dl dvd's. This is also common on single layer dvd's. Your problem appears to be the computer plays the files correctly until they are multi-plexed into dvd containers (vob files).

I think you have 2 separate problems. Audio sync & dvd (dl) burning.
For the DL burning I would check the media compatibility lists for your burner & try different media.
