VS 10: DVD will not play on macs

Post by kwagner »

Hello,

I've burned several DVDs which auto-play fine on PCs but will not play at all on macs. I know it's possible to get them to play on macs; I just can't figure out how...I do not see a compatibility checkbox in any of the options.

Any help appreciated! My boss is breathing down my neck :?

That's a very weird problem.
I do not see a compatibility checkbox in any of the options.
The files and data-structure for a standard video-DVD would be the same for a PC, a MAC, and a stand-alone player. (You should have a VIDEO_TS folder with .VOB files in it, etc.)

However, some players have trouble with some physical/blank formats. Some DVD players can't play "burned" DVDs at all. Some players can play DVD-R, but not DVD+R or vice-versa. Some players can't play R/W or dual-layer-burned discs, etc. (Your odds are generally best with DVD-R.)

Can the MACs "see" the folders and files on the DVD? Try copying the folders to a temp folder to confirm the MAC can actually read the files.

Can these MACs play commercial DVD? Can they play burned DVDs at all? If they are newer computers, I would expect them to play anything!

P.S.
You might be able to load the DVD into a PC and play it on the MAC by accessing the PC's DVD drive over your network. Or, you might be able to copy the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders to the MAC's hard drive, over the network, and play if from the hard drive.

DVD+R or DVD-R or DVD+RW or DVD-RW.

Many of the older mac's only read dvd-r dvd's.

The DVDs are all DVD+R, same as we always use.
The mac is a G4 I belive and plays other DVD-Rs we have created with this software just fine.
It does not even recognize the disk as being in its drive.
I am creating this DVD for reps to give to customers so it needs to be easy plug-and play for them...

Spent another hour last night trying to solve this unsuccessfully...

Thanks for all your thoughts...any ideas appreciated.

Were they exactly the same brand and model as the ones you used before?

What speed did you burn them at? We normally recommend very much against burning at the maximum rated speed of the disc. In other words, if you have a disc rated at 16x you don't burn at 16x but at a much lower speed that your burner will allow for that disc -- say 6x. This gives a better chance for the signal to be 'embedded' firmly in the disc, and thus a chance that a greater variety of players will be able to read it without skipping or, in your case, not even seeing it...

Otherwise, I have to agree that a video DVD is a DVD is a DVD ... regardless of whether it is played in a PC, Mac or stand-alone player...

So which is it, -R or +R?
