I followed this tutorial

http://www.hd-video-editing.com/HDTutorial_Page1.html

but while capturing the Video under Options (see image)

Image

when I set it to Project Template (see img) 1440 x 1080 it throws up "Cannot start capture graph" error.

Image

when i set it to one of the pre-defined ones (720 x 480) it works

Image

1. Why am I getting that error ?

2. Am I losing video quality by capturing in 720 x 480 resolution

My final objective is to make a DVD.[/img]

You need to just be patient until one of the Hi Def gurus from somewhere around the world wake up and log on.
I can tell you that by capturing to 720x480 means that you are losing the HD aspect that you certainly would not want to lose from that cam!
Ultimately you will get to that resolution of 720 x 480 of you want to create a standard DVD but I think it is far better to allow the software to down res at its own pace to get the best possible result. As it is the software is downresing "on the fly" as it captures and I don't think you will get the best possible handling of the motion within the file.
Anyway hold tight and help will arrive!

I would first check to make sure your cams internal HDV -> DV firewire conversion is NOT activated. VS11+ is seeing your cam as a DV device, the error VS11+ is correct. To verify this don't change your cams settings, change the format to capture to DV and capture some video. If you can capture to your harddisk in DV format then most likely the downconvert is activated in your cams setup menu. OR, you recorded in SD/DV mode instead of the HDV mode.

Nice cam, 20x optical zoom, nice.
The tutorial is only a Guide, I wouldn't suggest changing the video's fielding to FRAME BASED or the Frame_Size or the CBR (constant bit rate) to VBR (Variable Bit Rate) as on this page http://www.hd-video-editing.com/HDTutorial_Page5.html use Upper_Field_First all the way and leave the frame_size same as the original which is 1440x1080 & the bit-rate@25000kbs CBR. That guide is tailored to match his setup. It helps for you to post how you will be playing back your HDV video files. In other words just on the computer, a HD-DVD player, PS3, Xbox360 etc.

When a HighDef cam is connected using VS11+ the capturing devcie window will display something like AV/C device or HDV/AVC device (can't remember).

Important point with VS11+ is under Preferences (F6 Hotkey) make sure to check ON the box that says "Show message when inserting first video clip into the timeline". After you capture the HDV videos this message will then be displayed and you anwser "Yes".

Check your cams setup menu's for the downconvert feature being turned on...
