I saw your link to that site. I will review that
I also have tried looking at the waveform view of the audio track, you can see peaks there that might help placement. After posting that last query, I noticed that you can click on the chapter bar icon, above ripple editing to the left of tiimeline as you listen to the audio track. The timeline does stop when you do this, but you can place a chapter point there and then resume and click, stop and place at the next point. A small sample project I tested showed good sync with music effect. I don't know if VS11+ cue points work better, but holding off until 12 or just bite it and upgrade to MS. Charlie Hills also had a workaround for that in his Getting Results ebook with VS9 using and audio.wav as a cue, but it looked even more complicated. Try the chapter bar icon for placement of let me know if you have good results with your downloaded counter. Simpler the better. Thanks!
Also, just checked the above referenced link for MS technique in VS. Quite interesting. I assume due to the date of posting you were using 9 or 10+? Does 11+ allow you CUE effect control like the image you have from MS? I really like to have synced music for slideshows. Have had luck first using Wizard to create a synced project and then import into editor for fine tuning. Any tips appreciated!
