syncing clips on beat, length of a clip

Post by DylanL »

Hello,

I am making a video where clips have to be excactly on every 8th , 16th or 32th beat of an electronic song

one of my ways to try this was checking the length in seconds of 32 beats of the song. It was 14,700 sec.

To finetune my movie i want to adjust the playback speed of each clip to 14,700 or 14,7. However for some reason i can set the time to no more that 24 tenths of a second. So for example the next step after 00:00:14:24 is 00:00:15:00

I hope im making myself clear :) My question is how can i set my clips to 14,7 seconds.

The final two digits are the frame count so if you need 14.7 seconds it would look like 00.00.14....and here is where it gets interesting! If your video is 25 Frames per second then the last two should be...ummm...ahhh, gee my math isn't that good! Should be about three or four frames right?
So that gives you 00.00.14.04

The last two digits of the counter are not tenths of a second, they are frames. So if you are using PAL you have 25 frames per second. And if you have 1 second of video you counter would look like 0:00:01.00. If you had a 1 and a half second clip the counter would look like 0:00:01.13 (not 0:00:01.50).

So, 7 tenths of a second is .70. Multiply 25 (fps) by .70 and you get 17.5. Then your counter, for a 14.7 second clip, would be 0:00:14.18.

Gee, I hope my gazintas are correct.

Hmmm ... and that's only if you are living in a PAL country. If you are in an NTSC place, then it is 29.97 frames per second, so try working out what 0.7 of a second is in frames!!! (Hint: Probably 21.)

He mentioned "However for some reason i can set the time to no more that 24 tenths of a second", so I assumed it was PAL.

Another way of doing this if you have good timing is to use Cue marker.

In timeline mode pull down the menu withe the +/- symbol and select Cue Point.

Add the Audio Track and press play. At the beat, click to add a Cue Point and your cue points should match up to the Beat. (it also helps if you close your eyes and get into the rythym of the track)

That's only if he is working with VS11. Cue points were only introduced with that version. If he has VS10, though, he can use the Chapter marks for the same purpose, but if he has added the update patch to that version, those chapter marks will also carry over into the burning module and show up as chapters unless he removes them manually.

Regarding using Chapter Points in VS10+ for this since I

Post by tommytucker »

don't have 11. Is there a way to add Chapter points as cue points while listening to the beat of the music? I can't do that using the mouse to click on timeline and add a chapter because the audio is moving along too quickly. Is there a keyboard shortcut or some means to add the points while previewing the audio track?

No there is not as far as I know and believe me I have tried!
An alternative is to do it mathematically/mechanically by first using a beat counter to find the exact beats per minute of a music track externally then use a calculator to work out the beat points on the timeline. The one I use is a freebie called MxMeister BPM Analyser. There is a link in the free stuff section.

Found it! :http://www.mixmeister.com/download_freestuff.html
