Cannot save DVD menu, chapter, etc. settings

Post by SpeedTrap »

When I reopen a VS11 project and go to share -> create disk, many of the settings I had used are gone or otherwise corrupt. For example, the chapter names all go away or some just say Chap and others are complete (i.e. chapter03).

I've got a movie that I'm trying to make title and menu for that has 16 chapters and I'm having to edit some/all of them each time I open the DVD system. Makes producing duplicate DVDs pretty challenging at best.

And, there's no "save" option on this form either, it only saves when you close the DVD menu modal dialog.

So far, this is the weakest link I've seen in the VS11 product, but it's making it very difficult to produce the final product.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Terry

If you want to make duplicate DVDs, you don't do it by reopening the same project over and over again. Instead, when you have built the menus etc, instead of burning to disc at the very last step, you instead burn either to a disc image (.ISO) file, or a DVD folder (Video_TS). This also has the advantage of allowing you first to check that everything looks as it should do before you actually commit it to an actual DVD.

You can burn an ISO as many times as you like to DVD with the DVD VCD Disc Image Burner which comes as part of the VS package. Or you can use a third party program like Nero to do it. Nero will also burn a Video_TS folder.

As far as saving the project once you have built the menus is concerned, I agree it is a significant weakness in the program. However, once you build the menus and are satisfied, you can close and save the whole project at that point i.e. before you get to the final burn page. Then reopen the whole thing and all your menus should be there as you left them. A very klutzy method of saving, but at least it is there...

Yes, I agree about burning multiple DVDs. It just struck me as I was writing my note and wasn't well thought out. My primary problem is with the work around for saving the DVD settings as you suggested. If I close / save the project, then re-open it to do more work on the menus, the settings that I saved for the DVD menus are corrupt and I have to re-edit all of the chapter names and some of the other settings to just get back where I last _thought_ it was saved.

But thank you for the suggestions and your input.

p.s. It would be nice if after spending significant time working on chapters and naming them in the move "edit" mode, that the DVD process would use those chapters and name instead of making you do the work a second time. Just a suggestions :)

I am sure it would! However, I confess that I am somewhat old-fashioned about Chapters, and only insert them in the burning phase. Never quite got into the habit of doing it during the edit stage when this was introduced with VS10...

I am also not sure what might be causing the corruption of your saved projects including the menu/chapter titles... Hopefully someone else might have some thoughts on that.

I can confirm same problem with saving projects. Sometimes chapter names are shortened by few characters, and sometimes, they are replaced by default ChapterNN which corresponds in length to text that was written. I contacted technical support, and tried changing fonts according to their suggestions, but that did not work (or at least I was unable to find working combination).

My guess is that there is a problem with VS11 part that is responsible for saving projects and that it stores chapter name in multibyte encoding (e.g. UTF8), but it does not calculate sizes of text correctly and as such, when you try to load saved file, behavior is unpredictable...

Can somebody else confirm same problem. (That is a reason I am trying to apply patch to VS11, but that does not work either - described in thread about VS11 patch problems).

(I am using Croatian national characters which are supported by windows Unicode fonts. Characters are šđč枊ĐČĆŽ.

SpeedTrap,
Somethings wrong, the program should save everything.

On the projects I've done so far (AVCHD) when I reload the project everything is there and working in the disk creation module, at least for AVCHD Disks
(Vista)
