Should I take a sphere and try and stretch it into a line? What plug-in should I use? Can anyone help?

Indiana Jones
I'm trying to make a line extend across a background of a map to show the path of a journey - a bit like in the Indiana Jones films. Unfortunately I'm a bit of a newcomer to this - can anyone suggest how to do this?

thanks very much.

I would say you are using the wrong tool. Go to Adobe and download the free 1 month version of after effects. Do a search on the web first for your effect (I've seen it mentioned hundreds of times, try key words 'map', 'stroke', 'after effects', and 'line'). It is an expensive program, so hopefully you'll only need it for a month - or you could decide it is worth the money and buy it, of course.

Someone on the old forum once described a quick and dirty way to achieve this effect.
Create a copy of the picture and draw the line on the map in your favorite graphics editing program. Save the pic.
Insert both pictures into the timeline in your favorite editing program. Map wiothout line first.
Use one of the wipe transitions for the direction you need to reveal the line (Say left to right. and set transition time.
As the transition wipes across the screen from left to right, more of the map line will be revealed achieving the effect of "drawing" the line.

A couple of months ago I was downloading and trialing several other video editing software packages other than Ulead. Anyway, to make a long story short I remember one having a utility or something to do exactly what you want. But unfortunately I don't remember what package it was. At the time I recall myself thinking "Why would I need this". But now I can see where I would, Like if I wanted to map out a trip I was on.

I downloaded a trial of heroglyph v2 and after a bit of playing about, managed to get the effect I needed. I imported my map background and had the red line move over the top of it then export it all as an AVI. Had to sacrfice the panning effect of my map picture that I had added within ulead, but I think it was a net gain as a static map with the moving line was more impressive.
