No Disk Writer Device Found
An afternoon of installing re-installing and checking and I have found that using Nero 6 I can reeord anything I like, no problem.
It seems that the path Ulead takes for a recording device relies on a Window feature for success. That feature that wakes up the DVD/RW Drive is not functioning.
I reckon that Roxio seeks out the same Windows files for it's recording success and cannot link to the Windows feature.
Sorry about the layman's speak. I am no expert.

Check to see if you have any "packet writing software" installed.
These end to steal and lock the DVD writer so that other programs can no longer use the DVD writer.
Some of the popular packet writing programs are
Nero InCD
Roxio Drag to Disc
Pinnacle Instant Write
NTI FileCD
IBM DLA
CyberLink InstantBurn
CE Quadrat Just!Burn
Sony abCD
In effect what these programs do is turn your CD/DVD disc into a hard disc
where you can then use Windows Explorer to drag and drop files onto the disc until the disc is full.

Packet software
Ideally you are suggesting that I dump Roxio Drag To Disc and IN CD which I have.
Carrying on using Nero as a disc copying program and/or the facility in Roxio would be OK?
If not ideal, what is recommended as a replacement for those that would allow me to have success with Ulead?.
Thank you in anticipation.
Again - sorry for double posting

What Steve is pointing out is that the "Drag to Disc" and "InCd" features of Nero and Roxio have the habit of seizing control of the burner at start up and refuse to let go. In this way Ulead can not get a hold of the burner to start any sort of burn activity.
You can keep the Nero software but just go to the Control Panel and uninstall InCd. You cannot disable it and get the same result.
For the Roxio program it is enough to disable it in the icon tray and it will release the burner.
Then you should be able to use Ulead to complete your burn
I have Nero happily co-existing on my machine with VS as long as I don't install the InCd function.
I use Nero for "down and dirty" burns of videos where I don't need to have lots of control over very fine points of the video. I use VS if I have to do that.

IN CD/Drag To Disc
Thank you, at a decent hour I will get to my PC and do as you say. I did not doubt what our friend said, I just wanted to confirm. This has caused extreme frustration as I thought I was doing to well.

Device not detected
Despite your best advice I am still in a position where the software does not detect the DVD/RW disc.
InCD is uninstalled, Drag To Disc is disabled.
Would uninstalling that drive and re-installing do any good , or would it create more problems?
I do not have an installation disc for this DUAL16X drive, fitted by shop.
I assume that Windows XP Pro will detect and install.
I am stuck gentlemen.

Can't find Recording device!
I have tried every way to unlock, for want of a better word, the DVD/RW drive. Every permutation....
I uninstalled Studio 11 and my DVD/RW drive appeared. I installed it again and it disappeared.
I installed Studio 9 SE and the RW appeared.
So I have access to the lite version but apparently cannot use the Studio 11.

Sorry, but did you open up the computer case and pull out the plug from the RW drive and then reboot, turn off, plug the drive back in and reboot again so that Windows could not see it then would see it again and reinstall it? Or at least go into Hardware Manager and uninstall the drive? Not the software -- the drive itself? Then reboot so again Windows could reinstall it when it auto detects it?

DVD/RW drive
The engineer checked all connections they were OK. Connecting reconnecting drive, booting re-booting as you suggested.
I uninstalled the driver and re-installed via the device manager.
'Hardware Manager'.....new territory for me, where is that; he said feeling a little daft to have to ask!

Sorry -- my mistake. I conflated two things. It was of course the Device Manager I meant. I was going from memory, and of course the Device Manager can be found on Control Panel > System > Hardware.
If you uninstalled the burner that way, that should have been enough if Windows re-detected it and reinstalled it.
The actual physical disconnection of the drive and its re-connection was just another way of doing the same thing.

Device not found
Not a problem. I appreciate your help and concern. I have uninstalled and re-installed the program so often, but I will do it again just in case I am missing something. As far as I can see pointing the program at the drive is auto'.
Strange that it works with 'lite' Studio 9. I usually find I have done something daft when this sort of thing happens.
