PI and RAW

Post by lakewud »

So - treated myself to a Nikon D80, 18135mm kit lens. Happy so far, loving the feel of the camera..the results - for me, a newbie, ive yet to see.

What im asking is, aside from giving Nikon another 100squid for Nikon capture NX etc or Photoshop elements....I already have Photoimpact 12...am wanting to now use RAW, gave it a go...the image straight off is a lot darker, and probably grainer, than in my incamera viewscreen..ok, so im not sure what im doing..but i know what im after...

..seeing as its a 10pixal camera ( again, aware this doesnt mean the quality - in my hands - will be any better than a 80pound 3.2megapixal camera...need to work on those f-stops and white balances etc etc..

But, what im hoping someone out there will know, PI12, any good for my RAW images...the differnce between other more expensive packages?..what can i achieve...for now, im wanting...simply to print off professionally in a shop a RAW image - slightly doctored perhaps in PI.....so must i bring it into PI and then convert it to TIFF?? or jpeg..and then..simply?>. save it back onto my SD card?

Any thoughts more than welcome

Obviously no-one uses RAW and PI on here then! Either that, or my long winded question scared you all off! - fair enough.

I shoot raw with my Canon EOS20D. I have PI 12 but i do not use this in my raw editing because it's features is very limited so instead, I use Bibble Pro V 4.9.8c by Bibblelabs (Raw Editor/converter for $129.00). This program is cheaper than Lightroom but has a lot of features. After I processed my raw and save it to jpg or tiff, then I used PI12 for some jpg minor editing. I hope this will give you a birds eye view on raw workflow.
